Hi pepes Hit a brick wall with my paternal grandfather using ancestry co uk site I have his WW1 pension records in those he states born in: Aghavea, Enniskillen, Fermanagh - January 1881
BUT his census return from 1911 (Old Mill Cottages, St Fagans, Glamorgan) (which has his last name mis-transcribed as McLorley!) shows him born in: Dumbarton 1884
Now the census is definitely him as, he was living next door to his wife to be (in June that year!) Elizabeth Roberts And the service record is him as it has their home address and details of Elizabeth & their children
I've checked as much as I can think of (although I haven't as yet done any 'pay to view' Scottish or Irish sites yet as I've spent loads getting the birth, marriage & death certs that I've used to trace the family so far, from the GRO!!! :-S
If any one wants to contact me I can supply pictures of the above items to see if they can work out anything I'm missing.....
Blwddy Family Tree hobies, now who was it who said it was fun AND relaxing! gggrrrrrr ;-)

for our info:
1911 Wales Census about James Robert Mc Lorley Name: James Robert Mc Lorley [James Robert McSorley] Age in 1911: 27 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1884 Relation to Head: Boarder Gender: Male Birth Place: Dumbarton, Scotland Civil Parish: Llanilltern and St Fagan County/Island: Glamorgan Country: Wales Street address: Old Mill St Fagans Marital Status: Single Occupation: Railway Platelayer Registration district: Cardiff Registration District Number: 588 Sub-registration district: Llandaff ED, institution, or vessel: 07 Household schedule number: 99 Piece: 32051 Household Members: Name Age George Henry Langdon 33 Beatrice Maud Langdon 31 William John Langdon 9 James Robert Mc Lorley 27
The form was filled in, or at least signed by, his landlord George Langdon,so not necessarily accurate.
These are the only Scottish births 1880-90 for that name (or variant spelling) - Maddie's Irish find looks more likely:

If you want to check the birth that Maddie posted, try this site - it isn't free but not too expensive:
http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/archive-for-family-and-local-history
Click on Research family history at GRONI then click on Go to GRONI online.
You have to register and buy credits; up to 200; credits cost 40p and 5 paid for a view of an original death entry. You cannot print or download the image. The certs can be ordered on line for £8.
Not quite as good or cheap as scotlandspeople but a step in the right direction.

I have tried to look at the birth reg on GRONI but nothing is coming up.
From this on his Service record that he had served in the Army before: "8 years Colour Service Garrison; 4 years reserve."
Perhaps we can find his previous Army record.

Thanks all I've seen mention of the 'Lisnaskea' birth Thanks Maddie :) Will do as Potty suggests (another mince pie taken out of this years budget!) And yes his previous service is a bit of a mystery Where did you get the 'employment history bit from Maddie? He is listed as a 'plate layer' Great find :) I definitely hadn't seen anything on that before Pity I waited until any family who might have known anything specific had gone but, fairly typical I think :( Oh my sister thinks his dad was from Dunfirmline (only the other side of Scotland!) but she was told that 50 years ago so isn't that sure it is right now I've told her what I have found out.... :-D :-D :-D Many thanks to all and virtual drinks n mince pies too also

I am wondering about this one:
1891 Scotland Census James McSorley Age:13 Estimatd Birth Year:abt 1878 Relationship:Step Child Mother's name:Margaret Burns Where born:Ireland Registration Number:575 Registration district:Renfrew Civil Parish:Renfrew Town:Renfrew County:Renfrewshire Address:6 Newton St Occupation:Scholar
James Burns 35 b Ireland Margaret Burns 34 b Ireland John Burns 1 b Renfrew Theresa McSorley 6 b Renfrew James McSorley 13 b Ireland Patrick Millmore 56 lodger. b Ireland
On the marriage cert William is shown as deceased and there is a death for a William McSorley in Renfrewshire in 1889 but I can't find a marriage for James & Margaret. There is a birth on scotlandspeople for Theresa perhaps her birth reg could help.

Thanks Gritty I've had nothing on (possible) siblings - up to now that is! I'll put that into my notes
Potty; Interesting on possible adoption (didn't they change names as they do today then???)
I went onto the GRONI site & splashed out a bit more mince pie budget and found this:
Birth enhanced view: Registration details: Registration number U/1883/151/1019/7/100 Registration district Lisnaskea(pre-1973 Q4) Registration sub-district Brookeborough
Child details Surname of child McSorley Forename(s) of child James Robert Date of birth 20th January 1883 Sex of child Male District of birth Lisnaskea (pre-1973 Q4)
Mother details Forename and surname of mother Mary McSorley Mother's maiden surname Foster
Father details Forename and surname of father William McSorley
So much more info to help Once again thanks folks I'm in awe.....
