Las, if the birth cert confirms Thomas parents as James Branigan and Lizzie Gaughran, next step would be to order their marriage certificate which will hopefully give father's names and help to narrow the search for James on the 1901 census.

Las95...Brangan was mainly found in the Dublin area with a few in the County Cork and the County of Meath

Eringobragh1916, i think if i had to look for OBrien with all those different spellings then i would have pulled my hair out. :-S
That must be like finding a needle in a hay stack.

I will start looking for them in them 1901 census, thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Thank you again for all the help you have been giving me, you have been such a great help. Thank you.

Las95...Given that the vast majority of folk could neither read nor write the names were written usually by the Priest and could be spelled anyway he or anyone else interpreted them even within the same family...an example being my O'Brien family was Brien/ Brion/ Brian/ OBrien...try finding that lot...!!

What you need to do is look back and see how many Brangan's were on the 1901 Census..that is usually a good indicator to whether a name has been misspelled...

I didn't think of sponsors name on the baptismal cert, all this is helping me where to look, to be honest i didn't have much of a clue, i started the family tree quiet a while ago but when i got stuck i gave up, so all this is really helping me.

With you mentioning different spellings, i did come across a headstone that said Brangan, but then i looked it up when i got home on the Tullyallen graveyard site, and there was Brangan and Branigan, do you think they might have dropped the I in Branigan, as it seems that the Branigan was all the older people that had passed.
Here is the site http://irishgraveyards.ie/plot.php?plotno=138&yardid=274§ion=B

Maybe i could find that out in the church.

Las95....Don't be worrying about the questions..I have been there and done it over the years..I am an O'Brien and they told the biggest stories...every Census they came from a different county..at least you know for certain which County...!

Thomas' Birth cert will give you the parents names...His Baptismal Cert may give you further info..usually sponsors names and as you know they tended to be family members. The same applies to the Marriage Cert.

If the Birth Cert confirms James and Eliz.Gaughran Branigan as his parents then you have details from the headstone...which gives Eliz.parents.

I cannot find James on the 1901 Census but given his occupation he could have been anywhere ...We also have to bear in mind the spelling of Branigan....could be down as Brannigan .

Eringobragh1916, I wonder if they are, Mell is not to far from Tullyallen so there is a good chance they are family.
They are names to add to the list of possible family.
I don't know how you mange to find them all, i have been struggling for so long
in finding family.

Can i ask a stupid question as i'm not sure how to go about getting further.
If i buy my Grandfathers birth cert (Thomas Branigan) if that cert confirms that James and Elizabeth were his Parents, how do i go about trying to find James and Elizabeth parents, as i don't know their parents name and can't find james on the 1901 censes in Tullyallen and as far as i can see there is no 1891 census for Ireland.

Sorry for all the questions and thank you so much for all your help, you have been amazing with keep helping me with this.

Thank you for the update....!!
I don't know if the Parish Registers are still at Church but it would be worth giving the PP a ring...may save you some expense if he has them and can verify or no either the Marrage of James with Eliz Gaughran ( Marriage Reg.) or the parents of the children (Baptismal Reg)

Las95 Report 30 Dec 2014 17:37

Hi Eringobragh916,

Last night i looked on the Tullyallen graveyard site and looked up Branigan and Gaughran, and took down there names, i know they might not all be related to me but
it might help me along the way when looking for names. i didn't get to look at all the graves as it was very icey there today, i did see James and Elizabeth grave, so got my photo's and took down the details, i also got a few other photo's and will need to check them out to see if they are related.
There where flowers on the grave, it would be handy to meet the person who goes there as they might have information as my Dad doesn't really know anything about his Grandparents, I know at the moment that i have no proof that they are my Grandparents but i believe they are, and it was nice to see where there last resting place is even if i couldn't meet them.
My next step is to buy the birth cert for my Grandad to get that link proved.
It's been great finding out all this information and finding out so much more.
Thanks again for your help.

Given you are familiar with the Cemetery you shouldn't have much difficulty finding the plot it is a double one...looks well tended( when the photo was taken)....and there are some specific pointers eg that strange shaped tree!!

that is a good bit of information.
Thank you for passing this on to me, i really appreciate it.

Thank you so much for the information, i have been going to that graveyard for a number of years now as my grandparents are buried there, i have found another couple in there that i am related to, but i didn't think there was anyone else buried there related to me,
This is absolutely brilliant, i was only up there just before christmas taking flowers up there, will be going up there next week now to see if i can find there graves.

Thank you so much for your help, it has been a great help. :-D
