Is anyone able to tell me if there are/where I would find records of British births/marriages/deaths in India in the 1800s and early 1900s?
Thank you.

Try this
http://www.fibis.org/

They may also be recorded amongst the armed forces, or British citizens overseas BMD on GR.

Thanks everyone. I have tried India Office Family History Search in the past, without any success, even when I know all the details. Haven't found any on GR either, but maybe wasn't looking in the right place.

FMP has overseas bmd's of British subjects

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 29 Dec 2014 01:20

FMP also has :

British India Office Births & Baptisms

British India Office Deaths & Burials

British India Office Marriages

British India Office Wills & Probate

Since they 'updated' the site I can't find out the exact coverage of the collections

The same information is often available on familysearch as has been suggested earlier in the thread, but on a lot of the FMP entries you can see an image of the register, which often has extra information on the occupation of the person, or rank and unit of soldiers in the British or native army, in earlier entries if a person was 'Indo Briton' or 'native Christian',cause of death etc. So many brides aged only 14 or 15! I actually found it easier to do searches on Familysearch because you can narrow it down by putting in names of parents to find their offspring, then going to FMP to look up the names I found to access images and the information thereon.

There are images on FMP more often than not for the C19th, but these tail off as you move into the C20th, where there is often only a transcription.

You could let us know a few names it you like, or if you find them on familysearch, ask if FMP has any extra details

I have found Family Search very helpful in the past, but have come to a halt there as I don't know where the previous generation came from or when they went to India (or left) & there are multiple choices re some names.
I am not a member of FMP, but might have to become one. Had hoped being a member of GR would have given me the answers I want!
Thankyou

Hi

If you're stuck/don't have access to paid sites, you could post the details on here and other members may be able to help

Kucinta Report 29 Dec 2014 14:04

Just to echo what Gins said.

We can always try and see if the image for a record you have found on familysearch is available on FMP, and if any extra info helps us/you with identification etc .

As I said earlier, images are often available for the 1800s and very early 1900s, but as the 1900s progress transcription only becomes the norm, and more likely to be just the civil record/ bmd index rather than transcripts of church registers.

At least you'd know if you were missing anything, or if you had gone as far as you can, at least online.

EDIT: Or you could try this £1 fora month FMP offer:

Thanks everyone.
The relatives I am trying to trace are called Weller. My Grandmother said the family came from Cork, but she was born in India and I have subsequently found that her father was too - his name William Thomas, born 1857. THINK his father was John and John's father Thomas, but uncertain if I have the right family. William Thomas was still alive in 1910 as I have a photo with that date, but can't find any trace of his death or where he was then. Possibly UK as several of his children seen to be here. They all seem to have married in India but when they came to UK or what happened to them, I don't know. If anyone can add anything to my findings I would be most grateful.
