This is also interesting, although you would expect the father to be on the cert:

Marriages Jun 1930 (>99%)
Craig John W Hall Battersea 1d 1005
>>> Dorsett George H Moore Battersea 1d 1005
>>> Dorsett George H Pugh Battersea 1d 1005
Hall Florence A Craig Battersea 1d 1005
>>> Moore Doris Dorsett Battersea 1d 1005
>>> Pugh Doris Dorsett Battersea 1d 1005

Could it be that Doris was married to Mr Dorsett but he wasn't the father of her children (separated, not divorced) so still had the Dorsett surname, rather than her being an unmarried mother as it were ???

DORSETT DORIS MAUD 1895 — 1895 Births & baptisms Greenwich, London, England

Julie

Julie Report 22 Jan 2015 21:29

where would the record safc be found on?
It just seems a coincidence same name, same area, married after girls born...perhaps it is the mothers wedding - she would have been in her 40's

°o.OOº°‘¨Claire in Wales¨‘°ºOO.o° Report 22 Jan 2015 21:26

She's on the freeBMD as Dorothy Maud but I think safc is correct

Births Mar 1895 (>99%)
Dorsett Dorothy Maud Greenwich 1d 1158

If the marriage you found is your Doris then Norah would be registered as Dorsett as she was born prior to the wedding

Julie

Julie Report 22 Jan 2015 21:15

safc - I could only see this birth on free bmd:

Births Mar 1895

Dorsett Dorothy Maud Greenwich 1d

Claire - the other sister doesn't appear to have a father listed either

Julie, Doris could have met a man who wasn't free to marry her

safc I didn't look that far back....I was looking approx. 1914 - Patricia was born 1934 and her sister Norah Eileen 1936 - there may have been at least one more sister. This birth would have made her approx. 40 at the birth - could this be her mother with the same name - or was she an older mum?

Julie does the cert give you a home address for Doris?

Julie

Julie Report 22 Jan 2015 20:01

The birth certificate arrived today....no father mentioned - not surprised...the mothers name was Doris Maud Dorsett - I can't see a birth for her but have found a possible marriage Dec 1937 with George Lock - is this a coincidence as also in Battersea? Can anybody find Doris's birth - have I missed it?

An unmarried daughter of William John and Ada Florence who married in 1908 could have been the parent of Patricia b 1934 and Norah b 1936. That way the mother would have the same surname as the child.

Check for Dorsett/Spicer births post 1908, do the maths and the mother may be one of those daughters

Julie

Julie Report 4 Jan 2015 19:08

I have spoken to my husbands cousin and they believe Patricia and Norah's mother may have been unmarried and there may be another sister but unsure of details. I will get a certificate ordered shortly.

I think the birth of the other child that jansmith mentioned - Irene born 1931 - may be a different family as Ian who's tree she is in does not have either Patricia or Norah in his tree. "Norah" is the correct spelling according to the birth registration.

jansmith as far as my husband knows he only had one aunt - Eileen (Nora Eileen)

Julie

Julie Report 4 Jan 2015 00:52

Hi Jacqueline - She is definitely deceased - she is my husbands mother. I know she married 3 times - Pick, Timson and Dibley. The middle husband who is also deceased is his father.
Hi Greyghost I thought it was strange the child had the same surname as the mother - I wondered if she had been unmarried - but that would have been for both births as surname same on both.

jansmith

jansmith Report 3 Jan 2015 12:55

could there be another possible sister Irene 1931. If so search trees on here as she is in a tree.
