EARLY HISTORY
The name Emmerick probably had its origins in the town of Emmerich on the Rhine River in Germany at the Dutch border. It is possible that our ancestors came to England with William the Conqueror. There is an Emerick listed in the Doomsday Book of 1086.
We have records of odd Emmericks down through the years in England: William Emeric in 1276. The following is an extract from the Calendar of Letter Books of the City of London.
"Thursday before the 15th day after Easter, 1276. Falk le Taverner and Walter de Norwych, skinner, acknowledged that they owed William Emeric, merchant of Gascony, 19 1/2 marks, under a deed which Peregrine Peset, burgess of Bordeaux, attorney of the said William, produced before the Mayor and reputable men of the City; on condition that whensoever the Mayor of Bordeaux should transmit letters of the commune of the City of Bordeaux to the Mayor of London certifying that the said William Emeric had truely stated the amount in arrear of the aforesaid 19 1/2 marks. The said Falk and Walter would answer the said William as to the residue, unless the said Falk and Walter could truely declare that they had paid the said William more than he had declared."
There was a family of Emmericks living at Westminster in the latter half of the 16th century, one of whom was Robert EMMERICK who was buried in St. Margaret's, Westminster in 1590. Also at this period there was an EMMERICK family living in Farnham, Surrey. A number of other EMMERICKS have been found living in London in the 17th and 18th century.
John EMMERICK (c1780 - c1830)
Our first known ancestor was John EMMERICK who married Mary GREEN on 19th Oct 1807 at St. George's Church, Hanover Square, London. At the time of his marriage John was living in the Parish of St. Pancras. A search made of the St. Pancras baptisms failed to find any EMMERICK births for the period from 1770 to 1800 when John should have been born. So John was obviously born elsewhere. Searches of the baptisms of the surrounding parishes also failed to find his birth. Other parish records searched were St. Mary, Islington, St. James, Clerkenwell, St. John, Clerkenwell and St. George, Bloomsbury. So we will have to look further afeild. As there are many parishes in London, it may take some time. The next parish I will search is St. Katherine by the Tower as a John EMERICK was bapisted there in 1749 and could be our John's father.
After John and Mary were married they settled at Marylebone and John worked as a pianoforte maker. John died some time between 1823 and 1845. The civil registration records have been checked from 1837-1845 with no result, so he proably died between 1823 and 1837. The burial records of St. Marylebone Church have been checked from 1832 to 1837 with no result. So I will go on to check the burials back to 1823 and hopefully find John's death. This will probably only give the date of death plus age but this will give a fairly accurate idea of his birth year and hopefully make his birth easier to find.
CHILDREN of JOHN and MARY
John and Mary had seven children, all born at Marylebone, two of whom were twins. These twins were born on 25th July, 1808 and were named John and Philip Nicholas, William George (our ancestor) followed on 7th February, 1810, to be followed by Mary Sophia in 1813, Eliza Ann 1815, Charles James 1818, and Frederick John in 1823.
Philip Nicholas worked as a brass founder but there is no record of his twin John, perhaps John died in infancy. William George was a gas fitter's labourer while Charles James was a brass founder and Frederick John a brass finisher.
JOHN EMERICK (1794 - 1865)
I have been building up the life of a John EMERICK who was born in 1794 and whom I think must have been a cousin to our John who married Mary GREEN. This John was a clock case maker who married Charlotte STALLARD in 1819 at St. George's, Hanover Square. They then settled in the Parish of St. Pancras until October, 1832 when Charlotte deserted John and moved out of the parish. Two days later John left and went to live in the Parish of St. Luke Old Street at 26 Bartholomew Terrace. By 1839 John was living at 8 Coberg Street, Clerkenwell and still working as a clock case maker. He was still there in 1855 but also in that year there was a Frederick John EMERICK living at 58 Percival Street, Clerkenwell and working as clock frame marker. this Frederick John would surely be the son of John. Now our John's son, Frederick John was listed in the directories for 1852 as a brass finisher and turner living at 76 Margaret Street, Wilmington Square. So there must have been two men by the name of Frederick John EMERICK. The same family names are there so the John who married Charlotte must have been a close relative. It also seems that he witnessed the marriage of our Frederick John to Harriet EAST in 1845. This John died on 3rd June, 1865.
There is also a record of a Philip EMERICK born 1826 and died 1890 who may also have been a son of John and Charlotte. He witnessed the marriage of Charles James in 1845.
A Charles EMERICK is listed in the directories in 1836 as a clock case maker living at 5 Clarke's Place, Bagnigge Wells Rd. Perhaps he was a brother to John or even his father.
In the directories there is also a John EMERICK listed in 1828 as the licensee of "The Fox", a public house in Sherrard Street. Where does he fit in? He couldn't have been our John, the pianoforte maker or John the clock case maker or even John the twin if Philip Nicholas. It is unlikely that he was the twin as this John would have been only 20 years old in 1828.
