Margaret

Margaret Report 25 Feb 2015 14:36

I cant find my grandfather James Anderson's birth. i have found everything else except this. All the information i have ie census, marriage and death records say he was born in Glasgow. He was born around 1876, married to Margaret McBride who died in child birth and then to Margaret Price. I would be grateful for any help anyone can give. Margaret Anderson :-(

Scottish BMD's are on Scotlands people, for which you have to purchase credits

Presumably, you know who his parents were, having found him on censuses..........

Margaret, do you have his parents' marriage please? Could he have been born before they married and registered in his Mum's maiden surnameat the time James married, place of birth would not be recorded on the marriage registration. That is much more recent.

alviegal Report 25 Feb 2015 20:22

A tree on ancestry has his marriage certificate in 1910 to Margret Price. It says he was a pottery labourer, 33 and a widower of Swanston Street, Glasgow. William Anderson, joiner dec. and Margaret Skinner prev. Anderson MS Ross were his parents.
She was 19 and the daughter of William Price, leather cutter and Jane MS McCarthy.
They were married in the Sacred Heart Church.

Margaret Ross married William Anderson (no certificate or date) and in 1900 she married Andrew Skinner when she was 33. (there is a MC)
She was born 1867 to John Ross and Annie Grant.

EDIT Ok something wrong here. She can't have a son born 1876 if she was born in 1867.

So ignore the marriage to Andrew Skinner and her parents' names as someone has gone off on the wrong track with this and obviously found the wrong Margaret Ross.

Margaret Report 25 Feb 2015 20:46

Thanks for your replies, I have every information about him, two marriages all of the children, when he died but just not his birth. I found a census from 1881, mother Margaret Ross born in Coylton, Ayrshire widowed, James 5 and brother William 13. I've followed his mother who was married twice after her first marriage to William (although can't find their marriage either) through to her death. This makes me wonder if they were not born in Scotland although all information says James was he was. Thanks everybody for your help, I don't know what to try next. Margaret :-(

ArgyllGran Report 25 Feb 2015 21:24

Unfortunately, Margaret, for births after 1854, it 's not possible to narrow down a search for a birth on Scotlands People by using the names of either parent.

And James Anderson is a very common name.
There were 45 James Andersons born in Glasgow 1875-77.

Without spending lots of money on credits to view the images of all the birth certs, it's impossible to know which of them might be the one you want.

Sadly, not likely to be the right one, Catherine.
Ross & Cromarty is nowhere near either Glasgow or Ayshire .

Catherine

Catherine Report 25 Feb 2015 21:42

Yes, wasn't holding out much hope as the date is too early, but as it popped up I thought I would throw it one the table.

Have looked at James's first marriage and at that time his mother was Margaret Skinner formerly Anderson maiden name Ross.

So his mother presumably married Mr. Skinner before 30 October 1895

I wondered about this birth for William?

So from the above, William's birth will probably be the one I posted earlier. Unless James's father attended the birth registration James would be registered as Ross if his parents never married.

It may be that James just assumed his father was William, same as his brother. Also a bit of a co-incidence that his father was a Joiner and his stepfather a Cabinet Maker. What do you think Margaret?

I think you need to trawl through all the James Anderson AND James Ross births for 1876/1877 births in both Anderston and Calton districts.

I just hope you live near either The Mitchell Library or Scotlandspeople Centre, then it will only cost you £15 to spend a whole day searching the records.

Margaret

Margaret Report 26 Feb 2015 02:06

Hi folks, I will try to answer as many questions as I can, I went to Scotland's people at the Mitchell library and tried before 1876 and after, Margaret Ross came from Coylton and went back and died there. As far as I know James lived in Glasgow all of his life as on the 1881 census unless he was born elsewhere. I wondered if his father William had T.B, and may have been in a sanatorium as James had it and other family also so might not have been in Glasgow when he died. Margaret's parents were John Ross and Jane Campbell'. Margaret married James Skinner 30/04/1886 she had also married Charles Cammock 08/06/1883 which said she was a widow. He also died. I haven't found any information about James's father William other than his name on James's marriage certificates. I did try the 1871 census without luck so far. Thank you so much for your help. Margaret

rootgatherer Report 26 Feb 2015 10:03

Margaret do you have his brother William's birth certificate please? My gut feeling is that he is registered as William Ross - the birth I already posted. I don't think that he necessarily had the same father as James given their age differences. Remember too that if James was illegitimate he may have made up a father on his marriage to save face. Alternately, if James was very young when his father died, he may just have assumed that his brother William was named for their father.

I think, although it would be time consuming to look for a marriage and death for William to see what information that throws up for his father. We can't even be sure that Mr. Anderson was a Joiner or if James fabricated that occupation as his stepfather was a Cabinet maker.

I see you have at tree on Ancestry for the Anderson family although you haven't updated it for over a year. Much of the information is wrong and you obviously have more accurate details now. It may be worth updating it, just in case someone else is researching the same family and you may be able to compare notes.

I am wondering about this family as I don't see anything for a Margaret Ross in Coylton.
