there is no law against marrying your cousin, the law was changed by Henry Vlll so that he could marry his cousin,

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 5 Mar 2015 17:42

so far as I am aware, there was no law against first cousins marrying back then

.............. and I'm not sure that there is even now

It is not recommended medically, as such marriages increase the chance of a recessive disease will appear in the offspring.

I have been sifting through the Tipple records that i have and i have made a few startling discoveries.. George Tipple, Albert's father was born in Gravesend kent..
Sarah Ann Agnes Tipple born in Gravesend ,kent. I checked the 1871 census and they are both there as brother and sister, father's name William.
I have the marriage cert of Sarah Tipple to Frederick oram, her father's name is William. This must mean that Emily Oram and Albert Tipple were first cousins, yet they both married each other!!!. Was this really allowed back then, or have i discovered a " Skeleton in the cupboard" ?

This information has filled in some interesting gaps in my family tree. When i asked my uncle's about Emily, ( she would be their grandmother) none of them knew.My Mother Lorna,( deceased) Emily's granddaughter knew nothing about her.

Thank you for the info of Emily marrying Albert Tipple. I was a bit curious why she had used tipple as her last name. I knew it was her mothers maiden name. I will investigate further.

Elizabeth Report 4 Mar 2015 01:59

this may answer why she was calling herself TIPPLE .
Emily a Smith married a Albert Tipple on 2nd feb 1918 while he was on leave from the army. Sadly he was wounded and admitted to hospital on the 14-11-1919 were he died 17-12-1919

on his war record he lists wife Emily and all the children are recorded as Smith-
Tipple's.
On his effects he leaves his army pay to his widow Emily

I've checked the ER's and Emily is with her husband and the Carroll family in 1930 but not showing after this
Her husband is still living with the Carroll's

I think this may well be Emily's death with a few years shaved off her age

Could Emily have moved to the coast? The registration shows died aged 72.
1949-72 = 1877 but as the death was Q1 much more likely to have been born 1876. It's the only Emily A death
