This seems to be the birth that matches Mary Ross Philip in the above tree.

Mother: Helen Cordiner Or Philip
FHL Film Number: 6035516

I've had a look at the above certificate and it reads

Mary Cordiner alias Philip, illegitimate, born 136 High Street, Tyrie.

Mother was Helen Cordiner then it says Helen Philip maiden name Cordiner (widow)

Helen Cordiner (mother) was present and registered the birth.

Whether this is Helen Cordiner or her mother Helen King, I don't know.

136 High Street is the same address as in the 1851 census which I posted.

Other trees have this for Helen's husband, William. He was much older than Helen.

William Philip
Birth 01 Sep 1782 in King Edward, Aberdeen, Scotland
Death 06 Jul 1855 in New Pitsligo, Tyrie, Aberdeen, Scotland

and this for Helen.

Helen Cordiner
Birth Abt. 1815 in New deer, aberdeenshire
Death 09 Feb 1903 in New Pitsligo, Tyrie, Aberdeen, Scotland

Having a look at this just now..

Did see a death for Helen Philip nee Cordiner on sp in 1903, and can see her husband William was around 25 years older.. some age gap ;-) have spent nearly 2 hours looking for a marriage for them?? not on sp or Ancestry, even tried familysearch...

Don't know if this is of any relevance. Probably not, as Nancy's William is listed as married to Helen in both 1851 and 1861.

But I'm so confused by all the foregoing posts that I thought I'd throw it into the pot just in case! :

12/05/1851 PHILLIPS WILLIAM

It looks like Robt came out in 1920 - his 25/7/1968 d.cert says he's been in Canada 49y.

[His pob is given as Glasslaw (same as my gran) - it's in Aberdour psh, abt 5km NNW of New Pitsligo]

Evidently he returned to Scotland to fetch his wife and kid coming out again in 1921

[Now his pob is given as New Deer - the village is 9km S of New Pitsligo, but the psh is much closer - I don't know where the boundary is, but in 1841 my gg gran is a servant working a couple of kms SSW of New Pitsligo, but she's living in New Deer]
On both passages, Robt lists his closest rellie as his dad, Mr Mutch of Longside village/
Both times, Robt is bound for Pierson MB

Office Name: Pierson MB

Township measures northing in 6 mile chunks, counting from the US border, so he's 13-18 m from the border (actually 13).
Range measures (usually) westing in 6 mile chunks, counting from the pevious meridian (here the 1st, or prime, meidian)
Actually, the MB-SK border is between R29 WPM and R30 WPM down south, so Pierson was 1-6 m E of the MB-SK border (6 m actually).
You know all meridians meet at the N Pole, so abt half way up SK, the 1st and 2nd meridians are no longer 6*29-174 m apart, so in the north the 2nd meridian (i.e., Long 102 deg W) forms the MB-SK border.
(In British terms, if I go to Jersey (approx Lat 49 deg N) and start at some point and place another point 1km away due E, then thru these two points draw meridians and follow them north, to Lat 60 deg N (it's abt 15 km S of Lerwick in Shetland), then the meridians are no longer 1000 m apart, but just 762 m.)

There's an 1890s map showing parishes of Aberdeenshire (or any Scottish county) at:
http://www.electricscotland.com/history/gazetteer/

I can go to http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ and search for New Pitsligo.
It takes me to an URL and embedded in the URL are the OS coordinates of the arrow head, viz:
x=388500&y=855500 i.e., 388500,856500
These measure the easting and northing in metres fom a zero datum point 80 km WSW of Eddystone Rock (i.e., 140 km WSW of Lands End)

The newer Landranger coords are NJ 88500 55500 - both identify the same point.
Landranger admits using less accuracy by dropping the final pairs of digits, e.g., NJ 8850 5550 or NJ 885 555 or even NJ 88 55

So, for modern pics, I can try, e.g.,
http://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NJ8855
There's a little compass rose tool thingy, so I can move 1 sq N and pick a pic, say:
http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1293404
There's some blurb in footer - a mini-map - the blue grid lines are 1km apart; and some info:
Subject Location NJ 882 561 [100m precision]
Photographer Location NJ 882 560
