Bobtanian Report 13 Mar 2015 20:53

in the early 70's while metal detecting in the River Thames(yes the tide WAS out!!)

I came across a memorial brooch sadly much deteriorated on the steel parts

(Pins and latch)
the back was inscribed Frances Baly ob. 30 june 1841
aged 56 years.( buried 7th july)

I often pondered on the possibility of returning it to any family, in the present day.
I was never able to find a record of this lady....in the early days of FreeBMD, family search, 1837 -on line, as it was. and others, and my lapse of researching for the last ten or so years

until today.

found her on the 1841 census probably about 3 weeks before she died.
Husband William,(strange how that name keeps cropping up) but I digress...aged 60 he born 1781, and she 1786 .
with a daughter Elizabeth age 20
and two others who may not have been family.

William Baly and Frances Goodwin married on 31 jan 1810.
There is a wills and probate mention in 1847
and a death of an Elizabeth in 1848,
however there is a Elizabeth marriage to Saul Davy, in 1825 but I haven't yet been able to verify if this is a sibling of William......
the address for the 1841 was Norfolk Street St Margarets parish, Lynn, norfolk

William's will states that he had a son, William and daughters Frances and Elizabeth. He was a grocer and wine merchant.

Son William was a Medical Practioner.

There is a Frances who married William Shipp at All Souls, Langham Place in 1854. She is the elder daughter of William Baly Esq, of Spring Gardens, London and formerly of Kings Lynn.

I wonder if it might have been her medal or William's as he appears to have gone to London.

Full title : BALY, William (1814-1861) and Family

William Baly was born in King's Lynn, Norfolk, in 1814. He was educated at the local grammar school, and was apprenticed in 1828 to Mr (later Dr) Ingle, an esteemed general practitioner in the town of Emsworth. In 1831 he went to study at University College, London, and in 1832, at St Bartholomew's Hospital. In 1834, after passing the diplomas of the Royal College of Surgeons and the Society of Apothecaries, Baly went to Paris, Heidelberg, and Berlin to continue his studies. He graduated MD from Berlin in 1836.

Baly's life and career however were brought to a sudden, tragic, end by his death in a railway accident, just south west of London, on 28 January 1861.

Ah, I see you got there first ArgyllGran.

I was reading his obituary that someone has added to his tree on ancestry whilst you were posting.

It starts like this

THE LATE WILLIAM BALY, M.D., F.R.S.

William Baly was born at Lynn, in Norfolk, in 1814. His father was in general business there, but occupied himself in literature, rather than in the pursuit of wealth: his mother was a lady of cultivated mind, with remarkable good sense and energy. He was educated in the Lynn Grammar School, and was apprenticed to Mr. Ingle (now Dr. Ingle of Emsworth), an active and esteemed general practitioner in that town. In 1831 he entered as a pupil of University College, and in 1832, at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital. At the former he attended the lectures, and at the latter the practice, necessary for the usual diplomas of the College of Surgeons and the Apothecaries’ Hall. At both schools alike he distinguished himself and by earnest and successful work: but at the end of his pupilage, he attached himself to the one which he had selected for the practical studies for which he had the most affection and the most capacity.

ArgyllGran Report 13 Mar 2015 22:05

So, assuming William junior didn't have children before his early death, there would seem to be no direct descendants to whom the brooch could be passed.

Maybe one of the cousins mentioned in the censuses might be worth following up, if you really want to, Bobtanian!.

ADDED:
Actually, I think it's just one cousin.
I think Mary Josephine Powell in 1871, born Paris, is the same person as Meni J Fauvels in 1881, born Paris. Both born 1843.

I wonder if Sir Laurence was some sort of relation - he was certainly an important person:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laurence_Guillemard

Sir Laurence Nunns Guillemard, KCB KCMG (1862–1951) was a British civil servant and diplomat who served as high commissioner in Malaysia when it was under the British Empire.
Biography

Guillemard spent his early career in the civil service, and was in May 1902 appointed Deputy-Chairman of the Board of Inland Revenue.[1]

He was appointed Governor of Straits Settlements and British High Commissioner in Malaya in 1920, and was one of the promoters of British policies favouring the Malay ethnic group. He was invested as a Knight of the Order of the Bath and a Knight of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1925.[2] He left Malaysia in 1927 and retired from the diplomatic service.
