Thanks for your help everyone. You can see why it hasn't been easy with such a large family as the Dodds and them all being named Frederick or William.

So William Frederick Dodd 1892 nothing to do with this family ,is that correct?
I thought it strange to have 2 Williams in the family.

They might - no harm in trying.
It depends on when he died, or left their care, and how long they keep old records.

Yes that's right ArgyllGran . The father William George is in South Africa - mining. Don't know where to look from here. If I wrote to Exe Moor Hosp would they confirm William George Dodd was inmate do you think?

So, to recap . . . .

we have the right family in 1891, 1901 and 1911.

William F in 1891 is actually Frederick William born 1890
Willie in 1901 is William George.
After that no sign of him.

Father William not with the rest of the family in either 1901 or 1911.

Yeah unfortunately I think that is me. Haven't looked at my family history for awhile. When I find his birth cert today I knew I had picked up the wrong details. Too may Williams and Fredericks in this family :-S But yes I have his birth cert which says William George Dodd .

Ok.........so you do know for certain he is William George Dodd.

I noticed that a tree on Ancestry has him as William Frederick Dodd born 1892.

If he was born 22nd July 1892........his birth probably wasn't registered until the October quarter......

Is it possible that William George is actually the William Frederick Dodd born 1892 Tavistock, Devon?

The one who is on the HMS Iris/Isis, Torbay in 1911??

The 1911 census states that Ellen had 6 children born.....1 had died.

The other child living child is Hilda.

Yes that's right and he was known by my mother as Uncle Willie. Although to add to the confusing names my Gt Grandfather was named as Willie George Dodd when he dies in 1942 in Cornwall.
