Thank you for the links Jacqueline.

Lyndsey, as the direct line seems to be from John, child of Peter and Susan, I would have thought that an approximate year of death would be sufficient for Peter's first wife as there appears to be no issue from that marriage. If you wish to narrow the timescale for her death, then your only hope is to find a burial record for her.

You say there seems to be a number of females with the name Jane Bruce . The only Jane Bruce that I can see is the first wife of Peter who doesn't have an obvious blood relationship to John Coutts born 1853.

It is irritating - to say the least - to look at the old threads and find out that the info we've looked for today was already known to you, Lyndsay.

That fact makes it all the more surprising that you said that the incorrect 1861 census was your family, when you must have known that it wasn't

Lyndsay

How does the line go back from your mother-in-law?

It is vital that you work backwards and check every step carefully.

It didn't look like Jane Bruce was the mother of your John.

Lyndsey, Coutts is a very common surname in the Banff / Aberdeenshire area.

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 3 Apr 2015 11:19

You are quite correct Jacqueline, it is Reading, Berks.

I thought this was beginning to sound familiar!

From one of Lyndsey's previous threads

I have Peter Coutts b 2 Aug 1816 - his parents John Coutts, Surgeon, Strichen, and Margaret Smith, an unmarried woman. Trying to discover
more about John Coutts - dob, whether he married and to whom, and when he died. Had hoped to find record of Surgeons - presume he qualified in
Scotland.
Peter married Jane Bruce b 12 July 1819 in Banff and seek dod for Jane.
Peter married Susan Mchattie b abt 1816 in Berkshire, Eng and seek dod for
Susan.
Peter died in 1876 and was predeceased by both Jane and Susan.

Jacqueline, can you post links to the previous threads. I'm on an iPad just now and don't know how to copy the links. Thank you :-)

P.S. I used the McHattie surname for the search.

Thanks to all who have searched for me. Can honestly say I am even more
confused but shall carefully go through all the information supplied and see if I can
sort out. There are a number of Peters and Johns in the Coutts line and now seems
there are a number of females with the name Jane Bruce.

I really do appreciate all that has been found and posted for me. My mil was a
Coutts and hopefully will one day sort out this line.

Hellen Bruce
Age: 69
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1772
Gender: Female
Where born: Banffshire, Scotland
Civil Parish: Banff
County: Banffshire
Address: Carmetite Street
Occupation: F S
Parish Number: 147
Household Members:

George Dawson 65
Hellen Bruce 69
Margt Bruce 20

It doesn't look like any of the Bruce children were christened.
If you look on Scotlandspeople for the death of Helen Reid maiden surname Bruce it may give you the names of her parents.

Can you tell us please how you got back to Peter Coutts?
