Trudy, that was just a random example that mgnv was giving you. The information in the parish records varies. I have found some where the fathers' of the bride and groom are named and even a couple where the fathers' occupations are given.

You should be able to find the deaths on Scotlandspeople for the Kinnear grandparents that the children are with in 1861. That'll give you the names of Alexander Kinnear's parents including his mother's maiden surname if the informant knew the details. Remember to select for name variants for Jane Kinnear as Jane and Jean are interchangeable in Scotland.

Here are my transcriprions of images of the original entries:

1793 Foveran
June 1st Jno Thom Slains and Margt Gibson were married.
[with 6 other marrs in a tabular format]

In the Slains OPR
1793
June 1st
John Thom in this parish and Margt Gibson in Foveran
contracted marriage, were three times publickly proclaimed,
and no objection offered. Not married here.

On the page: there is one other similar entry where the bride was not from Slains;
there were 4 entries where the bride was from Slains, and these entries end with:

... and no objection being offered to impede their intended
marriage the same was solemnized on the 18th Day.
[The delays were 11, 23, 17 & 15 days on this page]

http://www.freecen.org.uk/ has 100% coverage of Angus(Forfar) 1841, but only 32% (incl St Vigeans) of 1851.
safc's 1841 is from FreeCEN.

There's an 1890s map of Angus(Forfar) (and every Scottish county) showing where the parishes are at:

Hi rootgather

Here goes
I worked back from my husbands grandad
Robert brown b 1893 in silver town Essex I know his mother was called Annie Elizabeth brown ( b1851)( confirmed from army records).
She married a man called Alexander kinnear brown (b 1849) in Charles street Dundee Scotland in June 1870. Alexander and Annie both lived in oriental road silvertown in the 1911 census.
Alexander's parents were
Alexander brown b 1817 St vigeans
Elizabeth kinnear b 1820 St vigeans

The Alexander and Elizabeth were confirmed to me by another researcher, the names Alexander and kinnear all tie in with the family over the years as well, my father in laws middle name was kinnear so was many other family members.

I have got stuck now tho and would really really love to be able to show my husband where his family all came from.

Trudy :-)

No, not sounding stupid at all Trudy. If you're not used to dealing with Scottish records, it takes a wee bit of getting used to.

Can I just ask please, if you thought your Alexander Brown was born around 1850 in Dundee, are you sure the St Vigeans family are yours? Can you tell us how you know your Alexander's mother was Elizabeth Kinnear please? Can you tell us where your Alexander was living on the census you have please and the occupation for his father on the marriage certificate? I would hate for you to spend money following the wrong family.

It may be worth noting that deceased online have superb coverage of burials in the County of Angus (at one time known as Forfarshire). From experience I have found that burials for married women in Scotland often give their maiden surname as a middle name.

Yes I know that's why I got confused I have never come across that before, sorry if I sound stupid but I couldn't work out if they were two different couples or the same couple just in different areas??

The records are from familysearch I see.

They do both say 'marriage'

Margaret Bannerman
Scotland, Marriages, 1561-1910
marriage: 18 March 1815 Saint Vigeans, Angus, Scotland
spouse: Alexander Brown

Margaret Bannerman
Scotland, Marriages, 1561-1910
marriage: 3 March 1815 Laurencekirk, Kincardine, Scotland
spouse: Alexander Brown

To try to get clarification, buy credits for Scotland's people

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 3 Jun 2015 08:56

The bride and groom came from two different parishes. The marriage would be recorded in both parishes. If you get credits for Scotlandspeople and look at the originals you know who came from which parish. Also there is sometimes a little more detail on the original but not always.
