Find Ancestors

Good Morning, i am struggling with details of two of my ancestors. Any help would be really appreciated.

I am Struggling to find the parents of a Robert Hamilton born Scotland 1831. I have details of his marriage to a Janet Dykes (Born 1841) in Lanarkshire and their children, also born in Lanarkshire, but i can't find details of his parents. There is a very high probability that is father is also called Robert Hamilton, as that has been the pattern for four generations of descendents.

I am also looking for the parents of a John W Smurthwaite born Sunderland 1839. Again i have information on his marriage to an Elizabeth Wheatley born 1842 and their children but can't find his parents.

Any help, or tips on where to look would be amazing.

Yes that is the same Robert and Janet as they had a son called Robert born in 1860.

That should tell you (amongst other things) on the certificate the names of the parents of the couple including maiden names of mothers, parents occupations, alive or deceased.

Smurfitt??. Is it possible the name was transcribed wrong, as i definitley have it down as Smurthwaite. Other wise the other information adds up.

John Smurthwaite senior has died by 1861, so the nearest the records get to his place of birth are Durham on the 1851 census and although the transcription says not in county 1841, I'm inclined to see the original as saying Yes to born in county.

As the possibility is that the first male child is John W, I'm wondering about this baptism for his father - ??
