Many thanks mgnv. Very interesting. I rather suspect she had developed Dementia if an Asylum was the best emergency placement.

mgnv Report 11 Jun 2015 01:40

The asylum was in West Ham RD in 1893 - it was a good 200m outside of the Chigwell subdistrict of Epping RD, but, by the time Lizzie's 90, it was in Redbridge RD. The buildings were redeveloped, but the grounds are now a park.

http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2710434 - the caption has 2 links.
The first points to http://www.wildessex.net/sites/Claybury%20Park.htm
The second is too long to post, but it, in turn, has links to a map of the park and to a brochure.

My guess at the location of the main building is OS coords 543350,191450 (or TQ 43350 91450 in the newer landranger coords)

Its amazing how our memory lets us down - both my contemporay and I thought she died earlier than 1971

Hope the GRO/Microsoft sorts itself out soon for you

Great stuff! :-D

Although I've just been on the GRO trying to order certificates, but keep getting 500 - Internal server error message when clicking on the 'Order a certificate online now" - darned annoying. Hope it clears soon.

Yes - that's correct Yvonne.

Although I've never found a baptism, all the census are known. It was primarily the death we were looking for.

Thank you for your interest

Probably Londonbelle.

In the unlikely event that the elderly relative can remember when her birthday was, that might help tell if it was the Redbridge one
