We can't find our great grandfathers death date. All we know is that it was between 1891 and 1901. He was a seafarer and on the 1891 census was a watchman on a dredger in the Tyne.

Shelagh

Could you clarify whether you mean his birthplace is HOWDON in Wallsend or HOWDEN in Yorkshire.

Dea

Dea Report 20 Aug 2015 15:39

There is also a Howden in Flintshire which first came to mind for me............

MarieCeleste Report 20 Aug 2015 15:41

Forgot that one Dea.

Husband's family are from Howdon, Wallsend and I'm guessing that it would be there if John Grant worked on the Tyne.

I note that on the 1911 census, although widowed, Isabella has put the complete number of years married as 44 years and this has been crossed out along with details of children born to marriage. So if John & Isabella married in on 8 Jan 1857 we must be looking for a death in 1901 for John. If Isabella is a widow in 1901 census and all the other info is correct we must be looking for a death between 8 Jan 1901 and 31 Mar 1901 when the 1901 census took place.

Edit

The nearest death I can find is

Deaths Dec 1900

John Grant's Masters & Mates Certificates are on Ancestry. Cover period 1857 to 1862 (although the 1862 certificate is annotated that he passed in steam in 1871).

In 1857 he lived at 115 Church Street, North Shields and in 1862 he was at 22 Little Bedford Street, North Shields.

ADDED: The address on the 1861 census posted by Londonbelle was Rudyerd Street, North Shields (mis-spelled as Rudyard).

I think this may be the burial for the 1900 death posted:

Liverpool, England, Catholic Burials, 1813-1988
Name: John Grant
Birth Year: abt 1829
Age: 71
Death Year: abt 1900
Burial Date: 8 Oct 1900

Address was 1 Empress Road.

ADDED: The 1901 census has widow Mary Grant age 53 at 1 Empress Road, West Derby

There's always the possibility that he didn't die on land, hence no civil death registration.

I'll check out the full article for this and add a link:

Last night a man named John Grant.who was engaged as watchman on the 'Tyne Commissioners' dredger lying opposite Stella Staithes, was accidentally killed on the North-Eastern Railway at Blaydon. Grant was, it appears ....

ADDED:
Here's the image - the age is out but the job seems too much of a coincidence
