That death IS him! Isabella is at 156 Cleveland Street on the 1901. Can only assume he must have looked young for his age.

The death could be one of these (Gateshead covers Blaydon, where he was killed):

Deaths Mar 1901
Grant John 65 Gateshead 10a 596
Grant John 68 Gateshead 10a 588

It was 156 Cleveland St

There is a Tree on Ancestry that has a copy of a Death Cert on it and I can't quite make the age out yet it is either 65 or 68! But is the wrong one because Occ is a Coke Drawer.

Edit

I think the Cert is for the 68 year old date is death 26 Jan 1901 Marley Hill Durham

Looks like the Cert reqd is the one for the 65 year old! There is plenty of info to support getting the right Cert.

Love the Article, MC.....it's great when it all comes together!

It's obvious that so many people on Ancestry have copied the wrong death from each other. This happens so often and people just don't check the facts.

The correct date of death is 18 January 1901 and it was NOT at Marley Hill and it was NOT due to senile decay.

Yes, you are right I'm always very wary of info posted on Ancestry until I have checked it out myself...this is a classic example!

Wow!! Thank you so much for all that info but in particular the death reported in Shields Gazette. His address in 1901 was 156 Cleveland Street so he was the chap killed by the train. I would never of found that out Marie Celeste! Is there a longer article in the archives of the newspaper?
Thank you all so much,
Shelagh

Hi Shelagh - no that's the full article as posted in the link, I checked other local newspapers just in case but nothing on-line. That's not to say that a local library mightn't have something in their archives.

And don't forget that his birthplace is HowdOn (no matter what the census mis-transcriptions say) - we locals get narked about the common mis-spelling! ;-)

The death cert on ancestry is incorrect as he did not have a son Thomas who was present at his death. I think my husband would rather have his great grandad killed by a train than have senile decay. We are now investigating his merchant navy tickets. John's son, grand son and now great grand son(my Hubby) all have master's tickets. Thank you again,
Shelagh

Well, you can have the satisfaction that your Ancestry tree will be the only one with the correct death info!

Let's hope John's descendants also inherit his youthfulness - to be working at 72 and to be taken as "around 56" he must have been quite fit and sprightly.

This link shows some info about Cowen's Crossing where the accident occurred, there are contact details for an archivist at the bottom of the page - might be worth a punt?
