James Lynes 1819-1888 was the baseborn son of Rebecca Lynes1798-1884, and I am searching for information about James father. His name was James Wainford (or Wainsford) 1800-? I think he was a Farmer. Rebecca lived in Saxlingham, Norfolk. Her father was Thomas Lynes, her mother Amelia Kirby. Baseborn James grew up to be a farmer with 10acres and married Elizabeth Brightin, 1819-1905, who came from Shotesham, Norfolk. I don't know whether James W came from the same village or from outside. Any help to run James W to earth would be very gratefully received.

Hi, Thank you Beverley. As James was illegitimate he took his mother's surname, which became mine eventually! James Wain(s)ford was named as the baby's father, but there was no marriage. Rebecca went on to marry someone called James Clarke and have two more children. Sadly she ended her life in the workhouse in Swainthorpe Norfolk aged 90. I am interested in where JW came from, his job and his family background.

Thank you all very much. I've found James junior and Rebecca, but the paternal spaces are empty for obvious reasons!! I think the 1837 chap could well be him. 1813 is too early as he was born in 1800. I'll have a shot at the older date and see what I can find.

Kucinta Report 9 Sep 2015 21:20

Surely if James is the father of a son born c1819, he is going to be born at the latest c1800, more likely in the 1790s or earlier?

The James who married Mary Lindo was having babies baptised before 1813, that's just when the transcript Chris posted the link to, begins:

Thank you all very much. I've written down in some old notes that James was born in 1800, but I can't remember how or where I got that info as I didn't write that down!!!! so I've been thinking that they were both very young and marriage for one reason or another was not possible, BUT, It could well be that I was wrong and that James was older, and Rebecca, who I know was a domestic servant was, well, in the wrong place at the wrong time!!! Young James became a farmer with 10 acres, (I have a photo of him and his wife taken he he was quite elderly) so I would think that his ''father' accepted some sort of responsibility for him.
I will have a good look at the info you kind people behave provided, and again, thank you.

This is wonderful, I feel that it must be them as the Lines (Lynes) surname fits. Thank you a dozen times!!!! There has been some controversy as to whether young James married Elizabeth Brightin or Webb!!! It would appear from this that the Webb is the one! Wonder where Brightin comes from? (This could be a complication!!!)
Must have some breakfast, then I shall go through all this. Thankyou again.
Liz.

JoonieCloonie Report 13 Sep 2015 17:23

hi magpie, I think the 'controversy' would arise from this marriage

Marriages Mar 1844
BENSLEY Sarah Norwich 13 411
? BRIGHTIN Elizabeth Norwich 13 411
BRUNDELL George Norwich 13 411
COOKE William Chapman Norwich 13 411
HOWLETT Sarah Ann Norwich 13 411
> LYNES James Norwich 13 411
SELF James Norwich 13 411
WHITELOCK Sarah Norwich 13 411

but unless someone actually obtained the marriage certificate or found a record elsewhere, there is no way to tell whom that James Lynes married out of that list of four women, and clearly now it was not your James Lynes :-)

OMG! What a conundrum!!! I will try and follow this up though, and thankyou for the info. There's just one other thing I'm trying to discover and that is the death of illegitimate James's father! He was there in 1843 for his sons wedding, but I can't find any evidence of his death. BMD's only have someone of the same name coming from Epsom, and that can't be him! Any ideas?!! Thanks for all your help and interest!!

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 13 Sep 2015 17:47

what information is there that he was at the 1843 wedding?

he is named on that record, but people did not always say their father was deceased

is the death info posted by Chris not likely correct?
... unfortunately just months before registration started, and before the first census
