thank you TAO - I agree - it is quite unseemly to "have a go" at a fellow member on this board and rarely occurs, thank goodness :-) :-)

that's fine, TAC

you're new and you haven't had to wade through these reams of unrelated posts every day ... in this case an entire page of the thread ... or have tried the friendly requests for less of it more than once ... or get the private messages from other regular helpers driven mad by it ...

was there something in all of that that was useful?

I'll be happy to delete my info about the Wiltshire Wills site if it is just cluttering your thread, since it doesn't seem to have been of interest.

Well JC, I subscribed to GR as part of their sales blurb claimed friendly researchers who were happy to assist people like me who, whilst not absolute beginners still require help every now and again. I really do think your comments concerning the postings from AnnCardiff to be bordering on the offensive and are quite unnecessary, Hardly the expected response from "friendly" helpers. All of the replies, including your own, are most welcome and have helped me in varying degrees to fill in a gap. It is of course entirely up to you, but I would have thought a short apology to be in order.

AnnCardiff Report 14 Dec 2015 16:48

how kind of you JC - give me a break FGS - I'm only trying to help the poster - just because it doesn't fit with your way of doing things doesn't make it irrelevant

JoonieCloonie Report 14 Dec 2015 08:48

AnnCardiff ... I have some familiarity with Wiltshire so I was looking at this thread to see whether I might help ... you have overloaded it with entirely useless and irrelevant things like the usual google search results that anyone with a mouse and an internet connection can find for themself ... plus get the actual link in question rather than the truncated copy&paste job you offer ... and the fact that you have to create a separate post for each pointless tidbit of trivia

this is so pointless and so unhelpful to askers and so distracting to other helpers, I keep wondering why you do it ... for you own enjoyment I am sure, but it does not qualify as help

I wondered whether wills might be of any help to you, for instance if Charles was named in his father's will

http://history.wiltshire.gov.uk/heritage/

86 results for Amor but no Edward

for Laverstock:

P2/1821/16 Will, wrapper 1821 Amor, Elizabeth Widow Laverstock
P2/1834/24 Administration bond, wrapper 1834 Amor, William Laverstock
P2/A/525 Will 1777 Amor, Robert Yeoman Laverstock

you might want to have a browse

do you know when Ann Dew died? I hesitate to try to find the answer among the bumph in the thread ...

there are wills for widowed Ann Dews in 1842, 1848, 1865 ... not likely that one is yours but again, you may want to look at the search results

I certainly agree that it seems most probable that Charles's parents were not married, but it is not unreasonable to think that he knew his father's name, Edward Amor

In the early 13th century, Saint Swithun’s priory held a small estate of about 16 acres, land that may also have been held by the Eyre family in the 14th century and later by John Dauntsey. It is thought to have descended with that family and then with the Earls of Abingdon. By 1764 it was sold to Robert Amor, passing eventually to his daughter and was settled on her marriage to William Tinker, who still owned the land in the early 19th century. By 1828 it was bought by the Earl of Radnor and merged with the manor estate.

Many thanks to you all for your quick replies. The comments regarding Charles being "illegitimate" certainly make sense and if it is the case then it would seem to solve a problem. Ann seems to have had a great deal of stamina given the number of children she had and bestowed her favours liberally!!!! Once again thanks for the information, now I can look forward to some more detective work.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 13 Dec 2015 19:15

Looking at the various records, I strongly suspect that Charles was the illegitimate child of Ann Dew, and that Edward Amor was a name he used on his marriage certificate in order to "look better" for the in-laws.

Looking at several Public Family Trees on ancestry I notice that Ann seemed to have a number of children, some with the surname Dew, some with the surname Amor, and some with the surname Russell!

Maybe she did have a lover called Edward, and "Amor" was the name picked for his surname :-)

If one could take a look at the original Parish Register entry, one might be lucky enough to find a note added by the minister as to whether there was a suspected father. Unfortunately, such notes are not often transcribed

The fact that Charles was probably illegitimate is upheld by the fact that he uses the name Dew, while giving his father's name as Amor ................ otherwise, he would be using the name Amor himself.
