ChrisofWessex Report 16 Jan 2016 22:49

b. 1846/7 in London/Surrey area. However in 1861 census she is in Gloucester Prison serving a sentence and was formerly employed as a dressmaker.

Her parents Thomas b. Somerset (a parchment maker- later a gardener) and Jane his wife (dressmaker) appear in 1861 census living in Gloucester.

Would love to know the conditions of her sentence and what happened to her - I cannot find her dead or alive.

Grateful for any suggestions as to where to look.

There is an article in the Cheltenham Chronical dated 9th April 1861 regarding a 14 year old Adelaide Middleton. She was charged with stealing a time piece and a blanket value £1 and a watch and guard value 30s.

She was committed to the House of Correction for one month.

from FindMyPast

she was described as being "respectable looking" :-)

9 April 1861 - Cheltenham Chronicle - Cheltenham

.... imprisonment. Friday.— Magistrates present: Colonel Newman (in the chair), and Corbet Holland, Esq. A YOUNG DELINQUENT. Adelaide Middleton, aged 14, a respectable-looking girl, was placed in the dock, charged with stealing a time piece and a blanket, value .............

----

The timepiece and blanket were worth £1, and also a watch and guard valued at 30s. She was also accused of taking "about 2s of copper coins"

The items were the property of Mr Edward Butler of the Calcutta inn, Gloucester Road, where Adelaide and her parents lodged

Her father said he hoped the magistrate would deal as leniently as possible with her, as he had done his best, having sent her to Sunday and day schools and kept her from bad company, but that she was "of very eccentric habits".

The father said that he had moved from London about 2 months before, where he had been in the employ of a manufacturer there. He was now working for Mr Gibbs, parchment manufacturer, Alstone

a tree at Ancestry has a possibly interesting person

Adelaide Paske
Birth: 15 May 1846 - Surrey
Death: Dec 1925 - Cardiff, Wales
Marriage: 1866
Spouse: Charles Paske

Birth
15 May 1846 • Brandon Street, Newington, Surrey

the tree cites a marriage in 1866, but the source given is the 1911 census, i.e. the years married

I don't see such a marriage

it seems quite possible this might be your missing Adelaide

1881

Name: Adelaide Paske
Age: 34
Estimated birth year: abt 1847
Relationship to Head: Wife
Spouse: Charles Paske
Where born: Walworth, Surrey, England
Civil Parish: Bedminster
County/Island: Somerset
Street address: 4 County Cottages
Registration district: Bedminster
Charles Paske 34 - occupation cooper
Adelaide Paske 34
Thomas Paske 13
Caroline Paske 12
John Paske 10
William Paske 8
Albert Paske 5
Robert Paske 3
Isabella Paske 1

in 1901 the household is

Charles Paske 55
Adelaide J Paske 54
Isabel Paske 21
Alfred Paske 17
Bernard Paske 13
Fred Paske 11

(married son Robert is next door)

a birth certificate for one of the children would tell you

the 1901 calls her Adelaide J, and the only Adelaide J born in Surrey in that year range was Adelaide Jane Saunders in Camberwell, who married in 1864 in W London
(and seems to have remarried a relation of her husband in 1897, with whom she is still iving in 1911, so that is a different person)

Sylvia .............

I found them in 1891 and 1901, and I think I found Jane by herself in Lancashire in 1881 as a parchment maker ....

but Adelaide is not with them

I can't find a certain marriage or death for her ............... A M is not an unusual name

I looked on Passenger lists but they all start much later

The tree owner doesn't actually have that marriage ... they have just assumed a marriage date from the number of years married stated in the 1911 census

Chris may want to get in touch and share info

tree easily found at Ancestry by searching for Adelaide Paske (now that I found her on that all-records search at Ancestry for Adelaide Middleton)

I have no idea why Ancestry turned up Adelaide Paske, since the name Middleton doesn't seem to figure anywhere in that tree

it's awful when you find Ancestry is smarter than you are

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 17 Jan 2016 01:15

there's actually at least 3 trees .............. one has her as Myddleton, parents unknown

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 17 Jan 2016 01:21

England, Select Bristol Parish Registers, 1538-1900

Name: Albert Paske
Baptism Date: 12 Sep 1875
Baptism Place: Bristol, St Matthias, Gloucestershire, England

Unfortunately, I can't see the image to see what Charles' occupation is!
