Beverley Report 19 Feb 2016 11:58

Disappointed received Martha's Wedding cert this morning and Father's name has a line through it , thus not naming her Father ... so don't know if Martha was Sister to our Alfred and Walter .

Where to go from now I'll have to put my thinking cap on !!!!

Beverley Report 11 Feb 2016 20:41

The only records that have survived from North Bierley are held at Keighley and they only had the boarding out of children Ledger no admit ions no record of Alfred in the book !!

Have sent for marriage cert of Martha will have it by the 17th Feb .. already sent for copies of Alfred's two marriages a few years back and of course Mum had the original cert of her Grandparents Walter and Annie so wonderful to hold the certificate that they held almost 110 years ago June 2nd 1906 :)

Just to add to Chris Ho's post- when you went to Keighley Library, were there any records on Alfred? Also were there (or did you search for) records of Alfred and Walter's entry to the workhouse?

Perhaps you need to contact the West Yorkshire Archives to see if they hold the relevant records:

The George Vallance that married Hannah Gratton died in 1868- the 1861 for that family is posted at 16:05. Don't think this is the correct family.

It's possible that Hannah Maria Hill/ Goff/ Vallance just lived with/ had children with a Mr Goff after her husband, Mr Vallance had died/ left. If she wasn't married to Goff, the children would've been still registered as Vallance- so perhaps adding Goff to her names was just her way of acknowledging the father. Lets face it- many people got away with putting 'not quite the truth' on birth and marriage certs.

Hannah Maria's birth?? (Based on Mary's post on page 1, saying born Holmesfield.)

Births Dec 1846 (>99%)
Hill Hannah Maria Chesterfield 19 478

On page 1, Beverley said Walter's mother was stated to be Hannah Vallance, late Hill, formerly Goff .
That means she must have married a Goff before Mr Vallance, but I don't see a Hill / Goff marriage.

Also, why would she be buried as Goff, if that was neither her maiden nor her current married name? Is that a different Hannah?

Just for interest - Miss Jessop of Butterley Hall in 1881, with a companion and lots of servants.
Whichever Vallance boy it was she took under her wing in 1876 couldn't have stayed long - Alfred & Walter were in the workhouse, and there's no sign of another Vallance boy here:

I'd be tempted to get that death certificate for Hannah Goff, but not sure about that death for George in 1868- think that death belongs to this George:

It's so frustrating!!
Please let us know what Martha's marriage certificate says- this mystery has me gripped.

Putting this up just in case it's related- grasping at straws!:

Sheffield Independent - Monday 05 June 1876

Belper Board of Guardians
A letter was read from Miss Jessop of Butterley Hall, Ripley, asking the guardians to allow her to adopt a boy named Vallance. She stated that the boy would be sent to Captain Fielden's home for children in Derbyand remain there under his supervision, until he could find a suitable person to adopt the boy in question. A long discussion took place, several guardians expressing an opinion that the children in the Belper Workhouse had great care taken of them, and that Vallance should be retained in the workhouse until he was fit to be apprenticed. On the vote being taken it was carried by a large majority that Miss Jessop be allowed to take the boy under her care.

I had linked these to Walter as same parents on the birth cert I presumed was my Walter , but the DOB is different to the one he states on the 1939 census but if this isn't the same person what happened to him !!

Yes you are correct on the censuses you have found , Martha was rather " fond" of William Arthur after his wife Annie died in 1901 Martha married him in 1903 they are on the 1911 census as married and three more children this is where she states born in Clayton .

I have sent for Martha and Williams marriage cert so waiting to see who she says is her father .
