Have been looking for George James DAVIES / DAVIS on the 1871 Census for years. He was living at 28 Rockingham Street, Surrey, UK in 1879 when he married Fanny Clapp. His father George was deceased in 1879 on the marriage certificate. It was witnessed by Sarah and Harry woods. I don't know if these were related or friends. George was born about 1848 in London and was a stonemason and Coroner's office worker. He died in 1892 in London. Trying to find out more about his family and siblings. Any suggestions or leads much appreciated!

What was his occupation on his marriage cert to Fanny? Only I see that on the baptisms of some of the older children (1877) he's listed as labourer- he's then listed as stonemason in 1878.

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 16 Apr 2016 17:36

I think this is him in 1881 (listed as a Stonemason):-

1881 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription
26, Surrey Row, Christchurch Southwark, St Saviour Southwark, London, England

First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital status Gender Age Birth year Occupation Birth place

George Davis Head Married Male 29 1852 Stonemason Westminster, Middlesex, England

Fanny M Davis Daughter Single Female 7 1874 - Battersea, Surrey, England
James M Davis Son Single Male 5 1876 - Battersea, Surrey, England
Albert F Davis Son Single Male 0 1881 - Southwark, Surrey, England

He seems to have been in the Southwark area in most of the records I have found, including the 1892 death that Hannah mentioned.

Thank you safc. That's the right family but it looks like George James Davies was somewhere else on Census night. There are family rumours that he could have been in prison that have yet to be proven.

That looks possible for George James Davies. Is that a type of boarding house as there are a lot of men at the same address?
