I was just looking through the criminal records- how terrible is this- Thomas Nolan only got 5 years (for Carnal Knowledge of Girl under 13), and served just under 4 years.

She's not at the cottage hospital. Another theory gone :-(

Malyon was surmising about the possibility that it could be Lottie Bloomer under another name but I am putting forward that even if it was there was another Bloomer family who moved away from Milton St between 1888 and 1891 census.

I am wondering if she was just in hospital for a few days. She's willing to live near her mother at a later date, wish we had 5 yr census, we'd keep a better track on our ancestors. lol

This could put doubts on it being the Lottie we're trying to find. :-)

Milton St were a Lottie Bloomer is in 1891 is in the Palfrey area of Walsall going towards Wednesbury. Well away from Wolverhampton St so I decided to investigate.

I have been looking at the newspapers and I find there seems to be a mix up re Bloomers.

An eleven year old boy came before the magistrate as he was totally out of control and was having fits. He was stealing and running away. He was remanded. His mother and father - Faith and Samuel Bloomer, Milton St Palfrey, admitted they could not control the boy - Charles Bloomer.

I've tracked Charles and he ended up in Burntwood, the local asylum dying in his early 30s.

In 1991 most of this Bloomer family have moved out of Palfrey and were then in Rushall - Lichfield end of Walsall Although no birth for another Lottie is there 2 and is this her birth family and was she left in Milton St???????

In the same article (descriptions of court cases) Thomas Nolan, an iron worker, was remanded for a rape on Lottie Bloomer aged 4, a child of a couple living in the same house as the accused. Nolan's address on this occasion was New St. This is near the parish church.

2 days later - another court appearance covered by the press. More details given and 27 Frederick St is mentioned as where he was staying as a lodger and where the rape took place . Then reference to Lottie being the adopted daughter of the William's couple of Frederick St.

Can't find Frederick St Census in 1891 at the moment. Will try later.

Lottie Bloomer was a statement witness after a stabbing in 1899 45,Wolverhampton St.,,,,,,in Walsall . Britishnewspapers.

I'm wondering if this is Samuel in 1901- in 1891 he was living with an Allen family. I'm still looking, but I know there's plenty that are quicker!

Whoever gave his information doesn't seem sure- his birthdate I think is just listed as January (no date) and he's listed as born in Canada- but, I can't see anything that fits so am grasping straws :)

The actual documents above aren't available on-line. I do know that Birmingham Central Library has the settlement records. They also have Middlemore admission records which often give the cirmcumstances of the child and detail any family they have.

What the above does tell us is that Samuel's documents in his setllement records go up to 1897- which probably means he was still in Canada then.

From the research on my own family I found many of the settlement records very poor (considering they were supposed to note the well being of the child)- many children were not adequately followed up in their placements and a lot of children ran away and were missing from the system.

Heven't got time to check further now as I have the grandchildren here from school but if you look here it will give you some info on Bloomer 'Home Children':

You may never have see Wolverhampton Street as it was. This is a Walsall Council site of pictures showing it's history by photos.

Be careful as there are some Willenhall photos mixed up with Wolverhampton St Walsall, check their titles.
