Before the mast - Literally, the position of the crew whose living quarters on board a ship were in the forecastle (the section of a ship forward of the foremast). The term is also used more generally to describe seamen as compared with officers, in phrases such as “he sailed before the mast.”

Amazing what you have found out about my family. I have never put 2 and 2 together to realise that Mary Ann was also married to my Great Grandad William Frederick. Yes an amazing woman to take on her husbands children from another woman. What programs did you use to do your research. I have only used Genes and Free BMD so far so there is obviously something better. You should be doing some training courses for the likes of us that struggle :-)

You have been busy. The name Julia Mary Cooper formerly Johnson is on my Grandads birth certificate. The name William Frederick Cooper is on there as his father. I also have purchased a birth certificate for who I thought was Williams father but don't know how to find out if this really is his father. The name shows William Frederick Cooper born in Islington with parents Charles Cooper and mother Ann Cooper formerly Shephard................how do I know if this is them?

What an amazing woman Mary Ann was to take on the children of her husbands mistress!

I don't see Julia Mary after 1901 - have tried Johnson; Cooper; blank surname in case she married although I can't see a likely marriage; emigration (would she abandon all her children??).
Don't see her death before 1911 - or later for that matter - at least not as Johnson or Cooper.
