I did wonder if the Gibson from his forename related to his father but as he was down on the census as Roberts son not step-son I never checked it out I was also trying to find out were the name Tom Elliott as his father came from on his marriage certificate.

Not unusual for an illegitimate person to name a father on a marriage certificate. Often in the case of males, the father has the same Christian name as their own. Sometime they choose the name of another family member.

Have you looked at the census for the area to see if there is a Thomas Gibson who may have been his father please?

Thanks he could be his father but I have nothing concrete to say this is true just speculation on my part think you could be right in that Tom put his name down for his father on the marriage certificate thanks for all the help
