Maybe the informant on one of their death records is family

You may have to work backwards to work forward

When did they marry ??

Have you checked the 1939 register

Edit seems1939 records are only for England and Wales

SP dont show a maiden name against births which stumps us all.also you have to order any certs to see the resutls which now I belive have just gone up again to over £12each.

There were 35 reg McNeil births in parts of Edinburgh ,4 of which were in Haymarket in years 1933--1945.--1946 to 1950 only 2 in Haymarket,,,,,no males have traditional naming fathers name though.

Scotland's People has his surname spelt with 2 L's on the marriage record
MCNEILL PETER JOSEPH
MCEVOY
Spouse details
1933
685/1 118
118
Haymarket

What were Peter and Joseph's parents and grandparents full names - there may be a clue to children's names in the Scottish naming pattern?

On the other hand, I'm not seeing a birth for Peter in Scotland.

Elizabeth's birth shows as 1908
MCEVOY
ELIZABETH DAPHN
F
1908
685/2 334
St Andrew (Edinburgh

Do you KNOW that the family stayed in Edinburgh after the marriage?

Kay????

Ancestry has trees with Elizabeth b 1908 St Andrews, Edinburgh and her death 1991 Edinburgh. None show a spouse or children.

Her parents show as married 1907 Glasgow and are down as

William Henry M McEvoy parents John McEvoy and Dorcas Cavanagh

ArgyllGran Report 3 Oct 2016 16:00

Please can you tell us ALL the details on the marriage cert, Stuart?

This is the 1991 death for E D McEvoy/McNeill:
MCEVOY

ELIZABETH DAPHN[E]

83

1991

738/ 739

George Square

MCNEIL

ELIZABETH DAPHN[E]

83

1991

738/ 739

George Square

As her death is listed under both names, that should mean that she was known by both names, so maybe the marriage failed and they separated or divorced.
(Unless it's a new way SP is showing previous surnames.)

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 3 Oct 2016 16:10

The informant on the death cert might turn out to be her child.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 3 Oct 2016 16:18

Peter's name (assuming this is the same Peter) is spelled with two l's on his death record as well as at marriage - though Elizabeth's is spelled with only one at her death - if that means anything!:

MCNEILL

PETER

74

1978

730/ 277

Haymarket

Stuart

Stuart Report 3 Oct 2016 22:13

Witnesses on marriage cert were john mcneill brother 27 wardlaw place and Sophie mcevoy 9 wardlaw place I reckon this was probably the two family homes before they married

Argyllgran,
It IS the new way of showing the death of a married woman.

All surnames for the deceased woman are indexed separately under one index number. ( in this case 738/739 .. under both her maiden and married names

Edit:
A wee tip that I found on the new death search on SP

If you identify a potential female death.
Search a 2nd time by removing the surname ( leave it blank)
Make certain that 1st name(s) entered is/are exactly the same as the one on the death that you located.

Ensure that the year and place also match with the result and... hit search

All death indexes with the same number will be the same person.
If there are more than 2 surnames, the chances are that she married more than once.

So far, I have found the deaths of 2 elusive women.
It transpires that both married a 2nd time and both married late in life

I never knew about either of the 2nd marriages until the name came up under the same index number and by using the name combination, I easily located the additional marriages.

I was initially unhappy with the new search but, I am now loving it!

(above are relating to William Henry Montgomery McEvoy, from google)

Chris :)

(snippet from first link)

On 26th December 1907 he married Annie Ogilvy Glasgow in the Church of the Sacred Heart in Edinburgh. He was working as a mental nurse.

In 1918 they had moved to 9 Wardlaw Place in Edinburgh. William was working as a rubber worker.

William died of valvular heart disease and pulmonary congestion, aged 65, in 1940 at 9 Wardlaw Place. Until he died he was working as a night watchman.
