As already said, there aren't online records for relatively recent travel or immigration.

Thank you AngllGran I agree, all it said on the certificate was that Manuel was a retired policeman .

I can't find where or when Jose arrived in England , He was a Spray Painter according the certificate aged 47 as he married he must have arrived in the uk at some time . Would he have been able to marry in a Registry Office if he was illegal ?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 11 Nov 2016 17:57

He may not have been a policeman in UK, Sheila.
He may not have been in the UK at all.

Or does the cert give some indication that he was in the UK?

Even if he was, there aren't online records for such relatively recent travel.

On the Ellis Island website, there is a Manuel Adrio listed. He was born c 1900, was a US citizen and listed Havana, Cuba as his last place of residence. He was in transit to Cadiz, Spain.

This is the same record on ancestry. He and a lot of other young men are all described as 'seldriers' or 'soldriers.'They are going to Melilla.

Name: Manuel Adrie
Arrival Date: 10 Sep 1921
Birth Date: abt 1900
Age: 21
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/ Nationality: Spanish
Port of Departure: Havana,cub
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Antonio Lopez

I wonder if this has anything to do with their journey?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_Legion

In the 1920s the Spanish Legion's five battalions were filled primarily by native Spaniards (since foreigners were not easy to recruit) with most of its foreign members coming from the Republic of Cuba.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Annual

The Battle of Annual was fought on July 22, 1921, at Annual in Spanish Morocco, between the Spanish Army of Africa and Berber combatants of the Rif region during the Rif War. The Spanish suffered a major military defeat, almost always referred to by the Spanish as the Disaster of Annual, which led to major political crises and a redefinition of Spanish colonial policy toward the Rif.

Melilla was only some 40 km away, but was in no position to help: the city was almost defenceless and lacked properly trained troops. The Spanish quickly reinforced Melilla with 14,000 men from the Spanish Legion and other units.

Sorry for the delay thank you so much . On the wedding certificate Jose's father was Manuel Adrio a retired policeman How do I find out if it was the English police force please?. Yesterday I found a 1910 Spanish census which named a Adrio family in Lugo in Spain with a Jose & Manuel Adrio listed. Jose M was repatriated to Cuba and arrived in Ellis Island USA. I have also been told that General Franco destroyed thousands of documents during his time . That is all so far

Thanking you all

Exactly Shirley. It's were *you* lived, not necessarily were the person died. Although we know he didn't, he could have died while on holiday in Leeds. You'd have still used the Brighton (Sussex) office which is closest to where *you* live rather than the Leeds one 100s of miles away.
Now that there is greater mobility, it's not unusual for executors who are family to live in a different area of the country. They would contact the Registry local to them, not the deceased's last permanent address.

I didn't use a solicitor I did the probate myself as the executor

We did the wills with a local solicitor but I managed myself with probate

Because of our address Brighton was the probate office that dealt with our area

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 6 Oct 2016 09:06

Here's a list of Probate Registries. As you can see, there aren't that many of them. Probate can be dealt with by any regardless of were the person died. It often depends on where the solicitor, if used, is located as they tend to use their local one. An executor would rather use a local solicitor than one close to the deceased's home.

Her will may have be proved at Brighton but that doesn't mean she died there

Lots of probate offices closed down so responsiblty for will probates were transferred

My hubby died last year in the Medway area of Kent I had to send his will for probate to Brighton to get the grant of probate done
