Thanks abby,
I have looked at those references earlier today but I'm not too sure about them although I can't discount them. I was led to believe that Hector was from London. (Deptford).
All I know is that he married Grace Tedman in 1931.
Grace seems to be in and out of workhouses while very young. Usually with a brother and some sisters, sometimes with their mother Rachel. I have never heard of Grace having a brother. (William according to workhouse references)

Hi to you all.
I posted here regarding Orris & Davies ( My Paternal line ) a few days ago and have had some great help so here is another question.
On my maternal side I only ever knew my mothers parents and no further so I decided to start with her father. We knew him as Hector McDonald Davey so I decided to use the official GRO website to order his birth certificate but they do not have him listed.
Are there people who are not listed on the GRO website ?
Or could he have had a name change at some point because I have this nagging in my head from an old conversation with my late mother. She said that there was something about her father that nobody in the family spoke about.
I HAVE found some war records of his name during WW1 but my grandfather would have been 16 when that war started so doesn't seem correct as he would be too young.
Any help regarding the GRO index would be appreciated, I have ordered a marriage certificate from them using my grandmothers details so will see what that says.
Regards .......... Gary
