Thanks greyghost,
I know My grandmother Grace had a sister called Alice but am unaware of an Elsie.
There were also sisters Winifred and Beatrice who I used to meet a lot when I was a child.
Looks like her husband Ernest Tedman died in 1907 and she marries a Frank Steggall in 1910.
Between the marriages Rachel goes in and out of a workhouse with some of her children but never all of them at the same time.

Regards ......... Gary

Thanks also to heyjude and chrisho.
My grandfather Hector definitely worked in a chocolate factory in the mid 1960's as I can remember him bringing chocolate home for us at easter. The family always said that he had made the easter eggs at work.
And after Hector died in Bellingham, Catford his wife, Grace, moved to Ashford , Kent. She died there in '86.
Like you, heyjude, I cannot find anything about his birth though.
Happy new year to you all.
I'll try again in 2017.
Regards .... Gary. ooops it IS 2017

SAFC - Abby,
Today I received the wedding certificate for my grandparents Hector and Grace.
I will try to scan it tommorrow but the details are :
Date married : 25/04/1931
Name of Male : Hector Macdonald Davey. ( I always thought it was McDonald)
Age 30 ( Doesn't fit with the year of birth I have 1998 )
Profession : Chocolate Maker. ( I remember my grandfather used to give us easter eggs he said were from the chocolate factory he worked in. This was in the mid 1960's )
Residence at time of marriage : 4 cockles Cottages, Speedwell Street, Deptford.
Father : George Robert Davey

Name of female : Grace Tedman
Age : 26 years.
Profession : Domestic Cook.
Residence : 110 Rectory Buildings, Deptford.
Father : William Ernest Tedman (Deceased). ( Could this be Ernest William ?)
Both fathers are listed as having the profession of CARMAN. (?)
Married in Deptford Registry Office.

As I think I mentioned in an earlier post, there were rumours that my grandfather (Hector Davey) had some sort of secret regarding his past but I still do not know what it may be.
Does it look a little strange that my grandparents didn't get married 'till he was 30 years old and my grandmother was 26 ......... I always thought that people got married quite young in those days.
Anyway, it's time for bed.
Regards ........... Gary

With the father named as George Robert Davey that confirms the 1901 census with Hector listed as Hector J

So somewhere along the line he decided to change his second name to Macdonald

Whoever reg his death only quoted one christian name

It certainly looks like his birth wasn't reg too

Thanks Shirley,
It certainly looks like you're right about my grandfather Hector.
His baptism record has him as Hector James, although the date says June 25th 1898. His actual birthday was July 25th 1898 as far as I know but the baptism record also has another date crossed out for his birth so there may have been some mistakes during the baptism.
Maybe my nan deliberately left his middle name off the death registration for a reason .... i.e. she knew he wasn't really Macdonald as everyone thought ?
It looks like I'm finally on the right track now.
Regards ....... Gary
