Thanks everyone but I don't recognise any of the names. The address on the letter is 1939 and is City Rd Chester . I remember as a very small child going there so they lived there until at least 1958. The letter was signed Alec and Nellie and they indicated that they knew the family well.

If William was born 1883 in Pulford, Cheshire (Hilary's tree) then is he a brother of Thomas 1879 from AustinQ's posting? Unlikely?

There are several Moulton families around Cheshire.

William, 1883, appears to be the son of John Poulton, 1860, Eccleston, in Hilary's tree.
Different family to Nellie, unless further back connection.

Rose and Fred are my parents and William 1883 my grandfather his father was John Moulton 1860 born in Eccleston . His father was born in gresford in 1822c . I am trying to find the link between these and the Moulton's in Chester and if I can find out who Alec and Nellie are this may be the way forward.

The way to look for a link is to work back systematically, obtaining birth, marriage and death certificates to crosscheck.

Nellie's father Thomas Moulton was born in 1879 in Crewe, parents appear to be Thomas and Lavinia.

Thomas Moulton, snr, was born in 1842 in Rope, Cheshire. In the 1851 census his siblings and Mother were born in Rope, and his Father (Aaron?) was born in Stapeley.

Perhaps the surnames are just coincidence, and they were just close friends.

Or it is from the non-Moulton side.

Have you got all your family with non-Moulton surnames, so that when you work back from Alec and Nellie through all the female lines, you know which other surnames to look out for?

Thank you for the help everyone I will look through all the female lines . After looking on Google Earth I think the property in City road is a hotel , perhaps when I visited them they were only staying there.
