Notts Girl there are a few references to Sarah Howe in the newspapers that you might want to look at while you're at the library:

Leicester Chronicle - Saturday 03 August 1878

WHITWICK
Sad death of a child. The mother censured.
On Tuesday evening an inquest was held at the New Inn Whitwick relative to the death of a child, Thomas Grimley Howe aged 11months, the son of Sarah Howe, single woman of Whitwick. It appeared that the deceased had been previously ill, and was seen by Dr Donovan on the 26th inst. and prescribed for by him. Dr Donovan afterwards saw the deceased on the 28th, but it was then sinking fast from exhaustion and want of care. He told the mother that if the child died he should not give a certificate as he did not think the child was properly cared for. It then had a shrunken and aged appearance, and was dirty. The mother had been haymaking lately and the child previous, to her so doing, looked healthy.
The jury having censured the mother for her negligence found the following verdict "Died from exhaustion, the result of diarrhea"

Hi Austin,

Had a look at the 1875 of Sarah HOLSEBROOK and she was the duaghter of a George Holsebrook.

AustinQ Report 30 Jan 2017 16:13

OK, thanks Wendy- not seeing Sarah Holsebrook daughter of George, but glad you were able to sort it even if it was just to eliminate from your family.

I haven't really had much time to look around today, but I find it interesting that she changed to Howe surname. Her daughter Emmeline seems to have been also registered with Howe surname.

Nottsgirl Report 30 Jan 2017 18:27

Hi Austin,

Yes Emmeline was a registered Howe, on 1871 census they werre down as Harris and on 1881 census Emmeline is with her Aunt Eliza and down as Whittle can find nothing on her aft that.

Sarah also had children Fanny born 1872, Edgar 1878 and William 1882 all as Howe.
I got the 1911 census for Sarah on which says she was a widow (we know she wasn't) of School Lane and that she had 6 children 3 had died, it has all name's and what age's they should be;
Kate Howe aged 36 and married, Thomas aged 30 and dead, Edgar aged 34 married, Fanny aged 40 dead, George aged 20 Dead and William aged 27 alive,
all crossed out except William who was living with her.
No mention of Emmeline .

On Sarah's burial it says Sarah Aulsebrook otherwise Howe of School Lane aged 70yrs buried 25 Jan 1916.

I think Sarah did have six children, but she has some of their ages wrong on the 1911:-

HOWE, WILLIE

There is no Kate- but I believe that Kate is Emmeline. As you said- Emma was living with her Aunt in 1881, she is still with her in 1891 using the name Kate (Looking at the original I believe the surname should be Whittle for James and Eliza, as on the 1881 census):

Hi Austin,

Thank you so much you are a Star. No wonder I could not find the Whittles on 1891 census. I have James and Eliza 1901 and 1911 and found their burials so that's them done apart from Jame's Will which was probated in London.
I have Edgar and his wife Kate on 1911 census and William is with Sarah.

Now there is a marriage of a Eveline Howe to Herbert Wright Mar 1894 Ashby de le Zouch Vol 7a pg 175 so wonder if that is Emmeline?

Again Thank you for all your help you are a star :-D :-D

That marriage is 10yrs after the 1939 register so to late

Dea

Dea Report 31 Jan 2017 10:19

Not too late Wendy - the 1939 details were updated with later married names etc until about 1991 so she would have been Wright in 1939 (they put that name in brackets on transcriptions) and then later married a Wallis !!

It looks like the Wallis name was added on 17/5/1949.
