Hello Everyone,

I am trying to find more information about my Great Grans first husband John Lyle. He was a bigamist and was apparently charged.Details are sketchy as the family tried to keep this "scandal" quiet. According to their marriage certificate he was 41 in 1917 when he married my great Gran Ellen Sarah Buckley in the Registry Office Hastings. Their address at the time of their marriage was Newgate Road, Leonards on Sea, Hastings. Great Gran remarried in I think 1921 to Charles Brown. She had one child born in 1918 with John Lyle, named Emma. I am hoping to be able to find more about him and any articles etc related to the bigamy.

I see Ellen was born in St. Olave Bermondsey, London, England in 1918.

There's an article Hendon & Finchley Times - Friday 05 December 1930 re that John Lyle's death. He was living at Watling Street at the time. (Where Mary was in 1939)

He was killed by an express train and his son, John Samuel gave evidence at the inquest.

so a different man !

Unless he returned to his wife?? Unlikely though.

There is another short article Globe - Thursday 29 July 1920- about a London company director (from Australia) that fled the country to avoid his debts. It doesn't give any other details, and I haven't looked further- but I was wondering what John's occupation was on his marriage to Ellen?

and who his father was

I note Emma was born in Bermondsey 1918.
