I meant to say, looks like Maddie sussed out Elizabeth Whitfield too.

Good thing, since she's the only known parent of Henry!

If Henry is a direct ancestor and you feel like spending a bit of money and time, there is always DNA testing.

If there is a direct male-line descendant of Henry available -- his son's son's son... -- that would be the best test, called YDNA.

The idea is that a match might be found who is descended from the same man as Henry, back however many generations. For instance, it could be somebody descended from Henry's father's great-grandfather. And that could give you a surname to investigate -- since, coincidentally, surnames in our culture follow the YDNA down the male line.

YDNA is passed from father to son to grandson and so on down, with very few changes over many generations.

But finding a match depends on somebody with a shared ancestor actually having tested.

(This is more likely to happen if someone in the other line emigrated to the US, because that is where most people who test are now. That is how I found a match with my grandfather's family: the man who matched was the elderly grandson, in the US, of a man from the same part of Cornwall as my grandfather, who had emigrated in the mid-1800s.)

It is the key that can unlock the mystery of unknown fathers, such as very many of us have in our trees. But only if there is a male-line descendant to test, and only if someone whose DNA holds the key does the test too. That could happen now, or years in the future!

MARROTT, EDWARD CHARLES looks like Charles Edward for sure -- and with no mother's surname recorded.

I thought I'd been trying alternate spellings ...

and

MARROTT, WILLIAM GEORGE - mother's surname blank
GRO Reference: 1865 D Quarter in BOURN Volume 07A Page 266

if Elizabeth was not giving her birth surname, she may have been representing herself as a single woman and not naming the child's father.

this birth showing the mother's surname confirms the MARROTT spelling

I would get Henry 1875's first marriage certificate out of curiosity.

'Henry Marriott Widower father ---Marriott deceased'

edited - sorry, I misread that first as his father being Henry Marriott.

So father was '--- Marriott' i.e. no name.

He didn't know his father's name and it is 99% certain it was not Marriott. :-)

JoonieCloonie Report 19 Apr 2017 15:25

Olive Jean, there is a new search facility at the GRO

(I didn't know until someone explained it clearly here!)

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp

Pick births.

The problems is ... you have to have a surname, with at least an approximate spelling.

When you know who the mother was but not how the birth was registered, this is no help.

It also only allows searches in five-year periods. The easiest way to do it is start with, say, 1850 +/- 2 years. Then go to 1855 +/- 2 years. That way you have covered 1848 to 1852 and 1853 to 1858.

But ... you also have to specify Female or Male each time.

So it gets a bit tedious and slow.

For marriages, just Freebmd, no?

Or did you mean other info from the certificate or parish record? That, I don't know ...

Just for info, people were absolutely not deported to the USA in the 1800s, or really anytime.

The US was an independent country after 1776 and certainly did not accept other countries' deportees!

I would think it quite possible that Charles abandoned Eizabeth - or perhaps at least equally possible, that she had left him for another man.

In 1861 she was a widow with young children

Elizabeth Marriott 30
Jane E Marriott 8
Sarah H Marriott 6
Eliza E Marriott 4

but 20 years later, she was still a widow, with children born after 1861

Elizabeth Marriott 50
Charles Ed. Marriott 18
William Geo. Marriott 14
Mary Jane Marriott 10
Henry Marriott 7

do you know whom any of the children, especially the younger ones, named as their father on their own marriage certificates?

malyon posted baptism records for Sarah 1855 and Eliza 1857

but I am not seeing matching birth records

None of the children at all seem to have been registered, at least as Marriott.

ah, wait, here's the last one, then working backward

MARRIOTT, HENRY mother WHITFIELD
GRO Reference: 1875 M Quarter in BOURN Volume 07A Page 327

MARRIOTT, MARY JANE mother blank
GRO Reference: 1870 J Quarter in BOURN Volume 07A Page 329

(the two Nyx posted earlier)

but

No William Marriott c1867
No Charles Marriott c1863
etc.

Elizabeth may have had a partner at the time the older children were born and they were registered in his name?

but checking some of the possible births with the right given names (e.g. Charles Edward Hubbard) against the new GRO index showing surnames, none shows Whitfield as the mother (or Marriott, in case she was being a little liberal with the truth)

Seems possible they simply weren't registered, since it wasn't compulsory until 1874.

I think it's likely that Charles went, and that either he returned to father the children or that Elizabeth went on to have the children my someone else, but kept her married name.

Hi
I agree it doesn't make sence
But all the children are mentioned on the Immigration off 1853
