Has the GRO record for Elizabeth Bisp's birth registration been posted??

Just in case ............

BISP, ELIZABETH mmn TYLER
GRO Reference: 1861 M Quarter in CLIFTON Volume 06A Page 135

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 14 Jun 2017 19:42

from the new GRO Index .............

Remembering that the GRO digitisation is unable to distinguish between week, month and age for many children, so 1 could = 1 week, 1 month OR 1 year. GRO knows the problem and is "working on it" ;-)

SMART, ANN HARRIET 1
GRO Reference: 1847 D Quarter in OXFORD Volume 16 Page 58

I'm not sure what to think of this one ........

SMART, MARY JANE 9
GRO Reference: 1847 M Quarter in CHIPPING SODBURY Volume 11 Page 210

IF it is the same one, her birth was registered in the March quarter, which could actually be for a birth from mid-November to last day in March. Mothers were officially allowed 6 weeks in which to register a child, although those who forgot or neglected to do registered often changed the birth date to later than it really happened.

so .................. does 9 = 9 weeks, 9 months OR 9 years??????

That is I think a problem that could only be solved by buying the death certificate..

Re "the blue cross" I am guessing that it signifies some doubt about the veracity of 1869.....

This is the only possible birth

Births Mar 1861 (>99%)
Bisp Elizabeth Clifton 6a 135 Scan available - click to view

I'd say December 1859 is odds on - but buying this would confirm it.

Thanks Jude!

I did notice the cross and wondered, do you think her birth date on there should be disregarded now? Maybe thats what the cross means!?

I noticed the Bisps but I haven't made the connection yet!
No doubt I will very soon!

As for Elizabeth's husband Alfred William Smart... I have on his baptism record that his parents are Samuel and Phoebe Smart. I cannot seem to find them on any 1861 or 1871 census or their marriage either!
Strange...

Any help would be appreciated!

There's a blue cross above 1869 which was obviously added later.....a family of Bisps living a few doors away as well

I'm wondering if Elizabeth was born 20 Dec 1859 as her baptism is 6 Feb 1861 to Robert and Hannah Bisp.

Did they record 1869 instead of 1859 by mistake?

I wonder..... :-S

Squeaky020

Squeaky020 Report 8 Jun 2017 11:25

The only question I do have about the 1939 is that is it states Elizabeth's birth date as 20 Dec 1869 but I have her baptism is 1861??

what do you think is happening there?

Any suggestions appreciated
