Louisa Jane Matilda Johnson nee COX

Redwroc Report 20 Jul 2017 20:40

Having now returned back home from holiday I've had time to consider the many replies for which I thank the respondents. The following are my observations:

Chris Ho in your first post most of the names are familiar to me and have no bearing of what happened to Louisa Jane Matilda JOHNSON nee COX. The John Thomas JOHNSON (marriage to Hannah Nightingale) is not the person of the same name who.married Louisa Jane Matilda COX in 1904. He is in fact the father of Clarissa JOHNSON (my Gt Grandmother). The references to various members of the COX family are already known to me and your reference to Genesreunited are threads that were both originated by myself. The 2 postems in FREEBMD are also of my making.

Rootgatherer, Andrew and Chris Ho (in your second post) you refer to Thos Arthur
JOHNSON and Elsie Louisa JOHNSON who are children of James JOHNSON and Louisa Ann JOHNSON nee COX and have no relevance to Louisa Jane Matilda JOHNSON nee COX.

Malyon - unfortunately the death of Louisa JOHNSON in 1947 is not
related to Louisa Jane Matilda JOHNSON nee COX. When I found this death in the GRO index I thought it might be a match given the age at death was appropriate, but having obtained a copy of the death certificate this Louisa Jane JOHNSON was the wife of a Frederick Henry James JOHNSON and was Louisa Jane STAPLETON before their marriage in 1899.

Sylvia you are perfectly correct in stating that the 1911 census the number of years married and number of children born/died/living were supposed to be shown for the wife. However in the 1911 census entry for John Thomas JOHNSON this information had been entered but then crossed out in red.

Andrew your reference to a Louisa JOHNSON in the 1911 census for Bournemouth might be a possible match. Certainly the number of years of marriage and her age seem to tie in. It's a pity she was not born outside of London as this would give a better chance of matching as indeed would be the case if her forename had been given in full. I'm not sure if I can use this information to and answer my original question as to what happened to Louisa Jane Matilda JOHNSON nee COX.

Again thanks for all your input. I guess trying to research JOHNSON and COX is not going to be an easy given that they both fairly common family names.

Regards

John

The 1911 Census would not show him as having any children UNLESS his wife had died and he had the children ....................

............... number of years married and number of children born/died/living were supposed to be shown for the wife.

It is a possible that there were 2 children born to the marriage as posted by rootgatherer, unless you can find another Johnson/Cox marriage.

Perhaps, try to trace those children???

Don't forget ............... marriages broke up just as often in those days as they do today

Redwroc Report 11 Jul 2017 16:53

Can anyone assist me to find more information about my paternal grandmother's Aunt who I can find no trace of after her marriage in 1904,

Louisa Jane Matilda COX was born at 9 Lennox Road in Islington on 12 May 1879. Her father was William COX and her mother was Mary Ann COX nee SANGSTER.

In the 1881 census for Islington she was aged 1 living with her parents and siblings at 9 Lennox Road.

In the 1891 census for Biggleswade she 12 years old and living in Asylum Road with her brother Arthur, his wife Clarissa and their daughter Lily A (my paternal Grandmother). In the Census record Louisa's place of birth is given as London - Finsbury Park.

On 12 October 1904 she married John Thomas JOHNSON in Farcet (Hunts). At the time of marriage Louisa was living in Yaxley (Hunts). The marriage certficate shows my paternal Grandmother as being one of the witnesses so I know I have the correct marriage.

In the 1911 census I found John Thomas JOHNSON (aged 33) born in Farcet (Hunts) and living in Farcet with his sister, her husband (Russell CROFT) and various children. John Thomas JOHNSON is shown as having been married for 5 years (which does not tie in with the date of his marriage) although his age correspondsto that given at the time of his marriage. On the census he is shown as having no children but there is no entry for his wife. According to the GRO index there were no other marriages for a John Thomas JOHNSON in Huntingdonshire between 1904 and 1911 so I assume that this is the right person and that the number of years married is a possible error.

I have searched the 1911 census for a Louisa JOHNSON and can find no record which could possibly be the person I seek. When searching the 1911 index I found over 1500 references to a Louisa Johnson of which only 4 were born in 1879, It is of course possible her age or place of birth could have been incorrectly recorded so without looking at each census record I could not be certain I have found the right person.

I have looked at the GRO index for a possible death of Louisa after the 1911 census with only 1 possibility being found and having purchased the death certificate this proved to not be the correct person.

Any helping in researching this further would be most appreciated.

John
