My 1939 credits just ran out, still can't believe it's 60 credits to look at a household..
Hoping someone could look up George Elliott in the 1939 register. He was born on 18/11/1918 in shoreditch or thereabouts, He was the son of John W Elliott and Elizabeth Alice Allen and George married May Shelton March 1946 Shoreditch.

Thanks all the birth is right with mothers maiden name Allon not Allen, I thought he would be on here as he died in 1993.
I am also having no luck finding his mother Elizabeth Alice Allen born in 1892 Whitechapel in the 1901 census? Her parents were Charles Allen and Mary Ann Newton, they were married in 1890 and her father Charles died in 1892.
I have found Charles and Mary in 1891 and Mary with daughter Elizabeth and husband John William Elliott in 1911, but can't find any trace of widow Mary Ann Allen and daughter Elizabeth Alice Allen in 1901?

Just found a copy of Elizabeth Alice Allen Birth cert 25th April 1892. Father Charles Allen and Mother Mary Ann Allen formerly Wragg ? Living at 9 St Georges House, Whitechapel. I can't find a marriage for Charles Allen and Mary Ann Wragg?

the 1939 Register was only updated until 1991 by the NHS

Then nothing was done until after FMP got the rights to transcription and charging for right to look.


Since then, FMP is apparently slowly updating by opening records by comparing the Register against GRO ...... but they depend largely on members and subscribers buying the death certificate and sending it with notification to FMP.

so ............. if anyone wants a closed record opening quickly (or semi-quickly) they have to buy the death certificate and send it to FMP


Otherwise one has to wait until FMP gets around doing the check.



Thus the reason why my uncle's record (plus his whole family of wife and 6 kids) is still closed even though he was born in 1895 ..... he, aunt and 3 daughters all died in Australia, 2 daughters still alive down under, son died in UK ca 1990s. I'm not about to buy the death certificates, and seemingly none of the son's children left in the UK seem interested in doing so either!

Thanks for all your help it. Father Charles Allen's occ is Painter and Decorator on daughter Elizabeth birth cert in 1892 and he was deceased in 1909 on Elizabeth's marriage cert. Ruling out the Charles and Mary Allen at Bucks Row and Walthamstow as my Mary Allen was living with John W Elliott and daughter Elizabeth in 1911.
Starting again with only the 1911 census, birth cert for Elizabeth in 1892 to go on.
Why can't I find a marriage for Charles Allen and Mary Wragg? and nothing in 1901?

So you have the 1909 Marriage Cert., any clue from Witnesses, what about Address?...

(have you worked back with John, did wonder if the Elliotts at number 10 on 1891 related somewhere!)

Were they married by Banns or by License?

She was underage (born 1892, marrying 1909), would have needed father's permission ........... and to say father was deceased was an easy way out!!!


Alternatively, of course, sometimes the father has left the family, child doesn't know where he is and says he is deceased rather than admit that ......... or mother has told her so.

This is great. It must be the same family, Holywell Place is John W Elliott and Elizabeth Allen lived up until 1940.
Need to answer some questions before I look at this info in detail.
John W Elliott and Elizabeth Allen marriage in register office on 7th June 1909, Whitechapel, the "rites & ceremonies* bit has been crossed out.
Witnesses were Margaret Hagarty?? and Mary A Allen. Bride was 18 and address for both was 11a St Georges House, Whitechapel. Father of John is George Elliott, newspaper vendor, these names fit with the names in notes 1901 record for Samuel and Eliz Rendell. I can't see at connection with the Elliotts at 10 St georges House yet but there must be. Thanks again

Charles was admitted to the workhouse infirmary on 17th February 1897 suffering with Bronchitis. His address was given as 9 St George's House. He was listed as a painter. He died in the workhouse on the 26th February 1897.

However, on the workhouse admissions (Ancestry), his wife is not listed as Mary. I can't read what the name is- perhaps someone else can look? Above the name is written 15 Whites Row- but this is for the entry above and nothing to do with Charles.

So Charles was born c1842. It looks like he'd only been in the area for 6 years.

(then where is Mary Ann, and Daughter Elizabeth Alice (born 1892) on 1901?)

(that St. George's House, George Yard, Whitechapel feature, but?)


(and was trying to sort that Birth of John Elliott (son of George above)

(and find Deaths for Samuel (Born Samuel Rendell Ruby 1850) and Elizabeth Rendell)

I think it's the correct Charles though- living at the same address as where Elizabeth was born, correct occupation too. So it would seem he was much older than Mary Ann. I thought the wife could be Janie?
