I'm now pretty certain the 1906 birth is correct for Phyllis- although it seems she made herself older on her marriage and death.

This is the birth of Phyllis Marjorie on the GRO:

WATSON, PHYLLIS MAJURA mmn:CROWSON
GRO Reference: 1906 J Quarter in HAMBLEDON Volume 02A Page 180

This is the birth of on of her her younger siblings, Rhoda Beryl:

WATSON, RHODA BERLEY mmn: CROWSON
GRO Reference: 1914 S Quarter in UCKFIELD Volume 02B Page 209
---------------------------------------

There is quite a lengthy article (and photo) in the Sevenoaks Chronicle and Kentish Advertiser - Friday 17 January 1936 re the wedding of Rhoda Beryl to Herbert M A Harrison. The article lists the wedding gift- among them are:

Mr & Mrs Jack Strudwick- this was Phyllis's sister, Evelyn.

Mrs Phyl Smith- your mother

This is Phyllis parents in 1939:

Rhoda A Watson 06 Sep 1877 Female Domestic Duties Unpaid Married
Charles R Watson 06 May 1878 Male Labourer Married

Wonder if this is Phyllis (2 years out from school record- but same date):

Marriages Jun 1942
Elton Frederick J T Smith Uckfield 2b 377
Smith Phyllis M Elton Uckfield 2b 377

Death:
First name(s) PHYLLIS MARJORIE
Last name ELTON
Gender Female
Birth date 18 April 1904
Death quarter 3
Death year 1987
District Crawley
Register number 987
County Sussex

-------------------------------

1939:

Elton (Smith) Household 8 Torbay Road , Willesden M.B., Middlesex, England
Phyllis M Elton (Smith) 18 Apr ? Female Shop Assistant (Barker) Married

There is some confusion over her date of birth- first written as 18th April 1905, then changed to 1902 (changed was listed in 1945)

I'm wondering if Bryan and Freda have been following the wrong Phillis?

I think Phillis and Frank had two children in Berkshire in 1925 & 1926- the first named after herself born (very) shortly after the marriage, and the other named after her sister.

Delicately though if they had parted in 1933 then it's looks like he wasn't your dad

Maybe that's why you were adopted

Have you got your original birth cert

You could still be reg as Smith because that was still Phylis surname and show mmn Watson

Could she have put his name as father to save face ??

Have I misread the original post? Was it your birth siblings that were born in Manchester?

Is this a coincidence- the year of his first marriage doesn't quite match, but he is around the right age:

Derby Daily Telegraph - Tuesday 23 February 1943

SIX WEEKS' GAOL FOR BIGAMY Frank Smith (45), a machine-hand, of Swainsley-court, Milford, was sentenced to six weeks hard labour by Mr. Justice Lewis at Derbyshire Assizes to-day for bigamy.
Smith was committed for trial from Chesterfield County Police Court on December 15 charged with marrying Mary Alice Mitchell, his wife, Phyllis Marjorie Smith, being still alive.
To-day he pleaded "Guilty.' and Mr. G. H.Myers-Ward said that Smith was married in 1928, and lived with his wife until 1933. There were two children of the marriage. He went about with the woman Mitchell for two years, when they discovered that shewas going to have a child, went through a form of marriage in September, 1936, at Bolsover.
MARRIAGE DISCUSSED
Mr. Myers-Ward said Smith did not tell Mitchell that he was married in the first instance .but to "give him due," when marriage was discussed he did inform her of this.
Mr. N. Winning, defending declared that Smith did not desert his first wife, and alleged that a letter, which was an exhibit in the case, showed clearly that she deserted him.
When it was discovered Mitchell was going to have child the question of marriage was discussed, and they went through a form of marriage as they thought to "save child's name."
Mr. Winning alleged Smith's wife had also committed bigamy, and said Smith and Mitchell were very happy together. Smith was an ex-soldier a a good worker at present on war work. Mr. Justice Lewis told Smith: You did have the moral courage to tell this woman you were married .That is the only thing in your favour.
