Missing Death - Lanagan, née Riley

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Ian Report 12 Sep 2017 13:11

My great grandmother, Mary Lanigan, née Riley, was born in Wigan in 1830 (approx). In 1858 she married Matthew Lanigan/Lanagan b.1825.. They lived first of all in Beswick Roq, Angel Meadow, Manchester and later in Barrows Court, Greengate, Salford and had six children.
The whole family is listed at the same address in the 1871 census, but has split up by 1881. The three oldest children are by then independent but the three youngest, Marcella, John and Matthias were living in industrial schools/orphanages. Matthew was apparently living in Leeds, but appears in the 1891 census as a widower visiting his son Joseph. Of Mary there is no trace after 1871. All the indications would point to her having died sometime during the 1870s but I can find no record of the death of a Mary Lanigan with approximately the correct year of birth (1825).
Can anyone help?

Thank you for this.. It looks very promising as the church is the Roman Catholic cathedral and the family were Catholics. I knew there were different spellings of Lanigan that were used. It hadn't occurred to me that I needed to consider spelling variants of Mary.

1871 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KD6Y-NZS
Event Place Salford, Lancashire, England
Affiliate Image Identifier GBC/1871/4020/0324
Matthew Lanigan Head M 46 Westmeath, Ireland M Tailor
Mary Lanigan Wife F 41 Wigan, Lancashire M Dressmaker
Joseph Lanigan Son M 11 Manchester, Lancashire Scholar
Mary Ann Lanigan Daughter F 7 Manchester, Lancashire Scholar
Marcella Lanigan Daughter F 5 Manchester, Lancashire Scholar
John Lanigan Son M 2 Manchester, Lancashire
Matthias Lanigan Son M 0 Manchester, Lancashire

Now piece number 4020 is a Greengate Subdistrict piece number.

Here are the 1871 and 1881 Salford piece numbers.

SALFORD RD RG10
Pendleton 4008-4012
Broughton 4013-4015
Greengate 4016-4020
Regent Road 4021-4027

SALFORD RD RG11
Pendleton 3941-3950
Broughton 3951-3956
Greengate 3957-3963
Regent Road 3964-3977

Deaths Mar 1874 (>99%)
LANAGAN Mary 36 Salford 8d 100

The 1874q1 deaths in Salfoord run from p 1 thru p 104, so we might reasonably guess Mary was rego'ed in the last subdistrict, i.e., Regent Road.

If we look more carefully at the deficient even pages in the range1-104, we see:

Deaths Mar 1874 (>99%)
JOHNSON Edwin 1 Salford 8d 26
LEE Richard 65 Salford 8d 26

Deaths Mar 1874 (>99%)
MARSHALL Nanny 9 Salford 8d 36

p64 [blank]

Deaths Mar 1874 (>99%)
PARKINSON Elizabeth 1 Salford 8d 104
SMITH James 39 Salford 8d 104
WATSON Thomas 18 Salford 8d 104

so it's easy to guess the 1974q1 subdistrict page ranges as:

Pendleton 1-26
Broughton 27-36
Greengate 37-64
Regent Road 65-104

Thank you. Plenty of detail to chew on. One complication is that Lanagan and its variants is a fairly common surname, and Mary/Marie/Maria are also common. What is certain though is the Barrows Court, Greengate address and the birth date of 1830.

Non-conformists (excl jews and quakers) could not be approved to keep official marr rego's until 1898, so a registrar would need to attend a non-conformist marr with his official rego for the couple to sign to complete the ceremony.
The law changed in 1898, but RCs chose not to apply to become approved persons until 1980-ish (a bit earlier in Lancs).

Your contribution, like the two previous replies I received, is really helpful. I knew John's birth was never registered. Not only that but he went through most of his life believing he had been born in 1870.
Winfred's existence is completely new to me, but perhaps helps to explain her mother's death. It's also interesting because John had a daughter called Winifred, who also died in childhood.

Ian - I think the Latinized form Mariae (with its various case endings) will only appear in RC parish rego's.

You might consider buying the official m.cert:
Marriages Sep 1858 (>99%)
Lanagan Matthew Manchester 8d 583
Riley Mary Manchester 8d 583

I presume this was an RC marr, not a rego office job. The m.cert would then show which church it took place in, and you could see if their marr rego was available somewhere.
Just because they weren't approved to keep an official marr rego, it doesn't follow that they didn't keep their own marr rego - which could show difft details.
As an example, this is my wife's gg grandparents marr:

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1838
Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
MCCANN George ASPINALL Margaret Wigan, Register Office or Registrar Attended Wigan & Leigh ROW/1/50

and this is the church's rego:

Marriage: 23 Jun 1838 St John RC, Wigan, Lancs.
[unnamed] McCann -
[unnamed] Aspinall -
Groom's Parents: Samuelis McCann, civitatis Wigan & Brigittae
Bride's Parents: Jacobi Aspinall, [of Wigan] & Mariae
Witness: Patricio McArdal, [of Wigan]; Esther Jackson, [of Wigan]
Married by: Hen. Segrave Miss. Apos.
Notes: [Bride's and groom's names not recorded. Here their surnames are taken from
their parents]
Register: Marriages 1837 - 1840, Page 40
Source: Original register at LRO

There are really just a couple of cautions with Latinized names.
James is Latinized as Jocobi and William is Latinized as Gulielmi (with various case endings).
Anglo-Saxon had case endings (as does modern German), but English just has 2 case endings - the 's for the possessive case, and nothing for everything else.
Modern pronouns do exhibit cases - I, me, my, mine, myself, etc.

For reference, the sites I used were:

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1®ion=UNITED_KINGDOM_IRELAND
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
[The last is also the URL for buying BMD certs from the GRO - a free rego is needed which allows one to search the new index and/or buy certs]

I am very grateful for your help. Until recently I have been living in Spain and relying on official government sites for information which are only helpful up to a point. Even so I had found out quite a lot about this part of the family, so I know that both St Joseph, Ancoats and St Peter, Greengate were associated' Matthew and Mary lived first in Angel Meadow but then moved up in life and lived in a marginally less notorious slum across the Irwell in Greengate. However, until now I had no knowledge of what happened to Mary, though I strongly suspected she had died, possibly in or after childbirth. So the information you've given me has finally answered those questions. Next project I think will be trying to flesh out Matthew's life before he arrived in England.
