So far I have confirmed that there were 2 children - Jane Hudson born 1838 (married James Birchenall) and Joseph Hudson (born 1851). I cannot find any record of Hannah from the 1841 census and so I wonder if Jane might have also been known as Hannah. Still no luck with the Mum's maiden name. Looks like I'll order some certificates and see how I go. I'll let this feed know how I get on.

That was my thinking Rootgatherer, as my gt gt had two wives named Annie, marrying between one census and the next, so the difference in age was the only thing giving the clue that they were not one and the same wife :-)

No problem Nyx. It is always best to be aware of ages given on census as it has been known for a second wife to have the same Christian name as the first.

My apologies, I was just dipping in and hadn't noticed that the age had been noticed and mentioned already. :-)

The 1861 census is the only way one that seems to give Hannah's birth year as 1836. I posted the census above and did say that on the image her age is entered as 25 years quite clearly. Jane is also on the census aged 25 years and the writing is quite clear. Perhaps the enumerator was dyslexic :-)

Perhaps it would be best to buy that Jane Hudson mmn Jackson birth certificate even if only for elimination purposes.

AAhhh but on the 1871 she was born 1810 / 11 ??

Just noticed the wife Hannah Hudson on the 1861 was born 1836, so 28 years younger than Joseph so definitely not Jane's mother. ( sorry if I'm stating what was obvious to everyone else lol).

Trees on Ancestry say that the Jane Hudson who married James Birchenall was the daughter of Joseph Hudson & Hannah Sweetman. This Joseph was a fruiterer & farmer.

The age for Hannah in 1861 is quite clearly 25 years on the 1861 census image.

Wondering if anyone has any other ideas. The children seem to have been born in Macclesfield so I'm not sure this is the right couple. Also, seems odd that daughter's Jane and Hannah were born in 1838 but the next child Joseph not born until 1852. I wonder if I'm accidently combining two families.

BurgessRae

BurgessRae Report 30 Oct 2017 03:04

I've found a Joseph Hudson who married Hannah Jackson in 1834, but it's in Lancashire - no 100% convinced it is the right couple, but maybe.

Sorry if this is a silly question (I'm a bit of a beginner). Do you think this means the wife's maiden name is Jackson? ie we are looking for Hannah Jackson?

Thanks, yes, I think that may be the daughter Jane who marries into the Birchenall family and appears on later censuses. It's funny the 1841 census does not have her, but does have a daughter Hannah.
