Dorothy

Dorothy Report 31 Oct 2017 22:53

my grandmother born 1892 Mntgomery. gave birth to Thomas Edward 1910. He lived with her parents. About 1916 she had a girl Dorothy (father unknown).
She later married Thomas Pickavance in Oswestry, Shropshire. Then mved to Wigan where she later gave birth to my mother Doris Mary 1920
Her husband later left and mum was placed in a home in Fazackerley nr Liverpool.
I thought l had all this down as far as l knew. But, l have just had a message from someone in Canada who says her dad Norman Oakley is my mums brother.
Plus there is also a Harriet Oakley.
Norman was raised in a home until he was a teenager. He was then moved to Canada to work on a farm. Can anyone help me untangle this mess.
I asked mums cousin if her mum had mentioned anything. I was told no. Her mum Agnes Annie, sister to Emily May had also had a child, a son who was also raised by grandparents. He died aged 21. Any help untangling this mess would be very appreciated

"Looking for relatives of Emily May Oakley born 1892 in Montgomeryshire, Shropshire, England. My father, William Norman Oakley, born in 1916 in Oswestry, Shropshire was her son. There is no father's name on his birth certificate."

I take it this is the person that contacted you? It sounds as if they have the birth certificate.

Ru Report 1 Nov 2017 08:55

Some information which may/may not help: my relative was connected with the Waifs and Strays Society - also went to Canada to work on a farm. To get further information on my uncle I wrote to The Children's Society, Edward Rudolph House, Margery Street, London, WC1X 0JL.
They were very helpful - you may like to contact them as they held the information on my uncle - from his inclusion with the Waifs and Strays Society and it gave me the background to his early life.
There were forms to complete and you may be required (as I was) to give information regarding the connection to such a person or persons, but I found it well worth the effort.
I am not in England, but if you are, a quick call would give an answer to any query you may have as to whether they hold any information on your family member or not.
Good luck.
Peahen
p.s. I am sorry I do not have a phone number for the Society, but it may be in a telephone book.

These are from the 1939 register who could fit in an age bracket.knowing his age in 1918 would help..
Also if Emily May remarried it may help give a timeline to any re-marriage for Thomas.

The record l have for Grans husband is from the 1911 census.
Thomas Pickavance, 28 Ormandys houses, Wigan

He was stationed in Oswestry where he married Gran in 1918
They moved to Wigan and had my mum, Doris Mary in 1920

He left gran and l have no idea if he remarried or had further children.
