That's the one Shirley. Crazy has posted on page 1 that she has the marriage certificate.

Crazy, who were the witnesses on the marriage certificate please? Just wondering if the may have been related to Alfred.

ErikH, if you have an Ancestry sub, have you try searching for Just the surname Thomas b 1876 +/- maybe 5 years and born America? I only have a sub for FMP and I don't think you can search the census using place of birth. I wondered if we could maybe find a sibling born America and still living at home with parents.

It's a bit of a blow that we can't find Alfred and Mary Elizabeth in 1901. Although the 1911 census gives young Alfred's birthplace as Sheffield, his birth was registered in Derbyshire. Wondering if Alfred and Mary Elizabeth married in America. There is an emigration record for a Mary E. Rothwell about the right age. Bit of a longshot though.

rootgatherer, I looked for incoming passenger info as soon as I saw his stated birthplace - there is nothing on Ancestry. Just checked again - zilch

Thank you, crazy, for letting us know that you already had the marriage cert for Alfred and Dorothy and for giving us the info from it. Confirms what we have found.

Could you please tell us what you think about all the other info which has been posted on here for you.

Crazy, unfortunately you have marked this as answered so helpers will think you don't need anymore help. Perhaps you could edit your heading to something like "still looking".

We could do with someone who has access to the incoming passenger lists on Ancestry to find Alfred b.1875/6 coming to England from America. It may help to know when he came and if he was travelling with family members.

The 1911 census says Alfred is a British subject by parentage.

This looks like your grandfather's baptism. Day of the month slightly different from the 1939 register but I think it is the same Alfred Thomas.

Looking at the parents' names it also ties in with the 1911 census posted by ErikH.

On the 1911 census Alfred Senior gives his birth place as America.. Perhaps it's his parents who came from Glamorgan?

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 22 Jan 2018 17:10

Have a good look at all the info which has been posted for you and see what you make of it. Then let us know what you think

But you will need to get a copy of the marriage certificate for Alfred and Dorothy to be certain what his father's details were.

You mentioned the family coming from Wales, but there's nothing to support that theory on the records found so far.

Yes, I think that's her. She's lodging in 1891 but no sign of her and Alfred in 1901. No sign of their marriage either!
