Foiled again. Colne,s electoral registers from the twenties and thirties were destroyed by fire and there are no copies anywhere. Should have remembered that as worked there 27 years. :-S
Checked the trade directories but no joy. But i am not giving up.
Thanks
Shirley :-)

Yes, good idea, Shirley.

Shirley Report 6 Aug 2018 07:55

Just thought of something. Maybe i can check electoral registers, for Colne in 1930,s . See who is,living there , might give me name of annes husband . :-S

Shirley Report 6 Aug 2018 07:52

Yes very frustrating. Think maybe have to read the full article then might find a clue. Or maybe get Mary Quinn's death certificate and see if it throws up something. Irs such a shame that the 1939 didn't have place of birth. I still have a gut feeling about the Easington Mary with maiden name Sweeney. Maybe James was called James Edward ..long shot or slim chance but i can dream ??

As you've already discovered for yourself, Shirley, there were no marriages of an Ann(e) Anderson to a Kennedy, 1905-1933.

Nor of an Ann Quinn to a Kennedy - though that would make her an aunt-in-law.

So if she really was an aunt, she must have been on Mary's mother's side of the family - but we don't know the mother's name, so can't identify a marriage.

There were no Kennedys at 19 Lister Street in 1939 - so that's no help.

Shirley

Shirley Report 5 Aug 2018 18:10

Woukd it be possible to find out who Ann Kennedy was married to ? Just thinking that f Ann was aunt of Mary Quinn nee Anderson she could either be previously a Quinn or an Anderson.she is 21 years older than Mary so seems,to be of her parents generation, so maybe sister of her mum or dad ? This may help with discovering who the parents are of Mary Quinn nee Anderson ? :-S

Shirley

Shirley Report 5 Aug 2018 12:57

Thank you . Guess he is a,possibility . William Quinn's dad was Thomas and William was born in 1904. Just trying from all angles really. :-S :-)

Is it possible for anyone to find a William Quinn born 1904 or 1905 living in the brighouse , Halifax area in 1939 ? :-)

Shirley

Shirley Report 5 Aug 2018 11:19

Yes very frustrating that. Rumour was that Annie , Mary Quinn nee anderson,s daughter was born or lived in a caravan. William on the marriage cert. Was a scissor grinder and Mary a hawker . Had so wanted dad to be James . Maybe will get some blues from Mary's death certificate perhaps? I was thinking that if she was used to the gypsy way of life she may have left to go back to that when she left William Sweeney with the children and disappeared. . Don't think they knew what happened to her at all. Maybe William Sweeney did and did not say anything to the children . Sad story. :-S

Shirley ............

just so you know, the 1939 Register gives no inkling as to where anyone was born.

It was a register of full names, ages, current address, and occupation

It was used as the basis for issuing ID cards for use in WW2, and then later as the basis for the NHS records

So the one piece of information that many of us would like for certain people was never even entered or asked.

ArgyllGran Report 4 Aug 2018 20:41

Possible - but only a long shot, as I said.

No middle name for Mary in any of the other records.
Maria (or Alphonso) doesn't say she's widowed.- but that proves nothing. She may not have been married at all, but just said so for respectability.

IF she was married, there are several marriages of Edward Andersons to women called Mary - none in Harrogate area - but as they were travellers, they could have married anywhere.

I can't see an obvious birth of Mary in Ripon.

I haven't been able to find William Anderson with any certainty in earlier censuses, to see if he had a brother Edward.
Nor even his birth in Ripon or area.

Shirley

Shirley Report 4 Aug 2018 19:47

So thinking maybe Maria, her mother even though birth of Mary is a bit earlier. She defibately born January 1911 . As from 1939 census. And when got her marriage certificate it definitely said Edward Anderson deceased. So maybe Edward was dad but had died by 1911 even :-)

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 4 Aug 2018 14:26

Just in case - Anderson, Foley, hawkers/pedlars.

I know she doesn't have a middle initial in any other record, so just a long shot.
I haven't attempted to investigated her mother's marriage re father's name:

Shirley Report 4 Aug 2018 12:52

I've,discovered that Mary Anderson's dad was supposedly Edward Anderson on her marriage certificate to William Quinn in 1928. Edward Anderson was deceased and the marriage took place in Brighouse,at the registry office. Mary Anderson was a,hawker. Aged,18. William Quinn was 24. :-)

Had heard they were travellers. Think Margaret June never knew, her mum really . She left and obviously went back to Halifax, maybe returning to her husband ? William Sweeney brought her up. Don't think she had any contact after that. Don't think she knew where she had gone. Would love to know the Anne Kennedy connection. I am thinking more along the lines of it being the Mary Anderson with mothers, maiden name Sweeney because that may explain why she first came to live with the widiwed William Sweeney. She could be a,cousin cone to take care of the children ? Or are the children from the census , hers as,well as,William sweeneys ? :-S
