The birth date I've been given is 17 January 1885 but that hasn't been verified and the person who gave it is deceased. Maybe the 1885 is a typo and the 1886 ref you found is the correct one.
Since he did so much back and forth I suppose it's possible he died in UK and that 1987 date looks a strong possibility.

I don't see either William or Clarrie in 1940, so maybe they died 1930-40 - though that's not very old

I can't actually find his birth record at all.
You say he was born 1885, and most of the censuses, etc, say 1887-8 - but I can't find it.
