Hello, can anyone help in the above census.

Tamar Pickering marries Nicholas Hodgson 24 Feb 1835 at Bishop Wearmouth Sunderland. Nicholas born 1815 at Aycliffe, Co Durham and Tamar born 1813 Bishop Wearmouth Sunderland.

This is the 1841 census, Norfolk Street Bishop Wearmouth

Nicholas 25/29
Tamar 25/29

Her name has been transcribed as Thamar and Thamas on the birth of her children who are Nicholas Pickering Hodgson (dies in infancy), John Pickering Hodgson, Mary Hodgson, Nicholas, William and Richard although not sure about Richard. Tamar dies 1870.

I cannot find Nicholas or Tamar on the 1851 or 1861 census. I can't find a death for Nicholas either. The only info I am looking for are the two census.

Thank you.

How strange Maddie. I can see the birth for June Q 1860 on FBD but I can't find it on the GRO. I wonder if Nicholas had died and Tamar was born 1860 and Tamar snr gave Tamar jnr her maiden name. Can't find Tamar jnr on 1861 census.

Thank you all, I wonder what Nicholas was doing in India. He maybe called his son after his employer, Richard White. I've only got family search and the search criteria for the census isn't very good, doesn't seem to work when I put a postal address in (unless I'm not very good and am missing something). I am going to google Richard White to see what it brings up.

Richard White, Esq, Thorney Lodge, Sunderland, was on the Provisional Committee for the Newcastle, Durham and Lancashire Junction Railway Company.

His brother Andrew was first Mayor of Sunderland, and Richard was also Mayor in 1840.

Scroll down to the final article, headed "First Mayor of Sunderland". Richard is also mentioned.

Just for the record - the death related to the tree info posted by MargaretM:

Nicholas Hodgson
in the India, Select Deaths and Burials, 1719-1948
Name: Nicholas Hodgson
Gender: Male
Age: 42
Birth Date: 1816
Death Date: 21 Apr 1858
Burial Date: 22 Apr 1858
Burial Place: Fort William, Bengal, India
FHL Film Number: 498996

In 1841 Nicholas is a coachman. Maybe he moved on from that to engines, and maybe was in India in connection with railways ??

The 1850's were a time of great railway expansion in India, and Richard White was involved with railways..

Thanks Argyll, and Maddie

I can imagine Nicholas dying of dysentry or maybe he was caught in the aftermath of the Indian mutiny, who knows.

I also don't know what to make of Charlotte's daughter's name although John Pickering is Tamar's brother but still doesn't explain why they would give Tamar's married name to their daughter.

Going back to the 1851 and 1861 census addresses posted by Mike, none of the sites I have access to allows the address to be put in. I seem to recall FMP let you search by address. Is this facility still available? If so, could either of you try it (if you have subs) - thank you.

It looks as though Richard White Hodgson eventually dies in the workhouse in Sunderland in 1913.

Details of Nicholas who died in 1858 in India from looking at the image from British India Office Ecclesiastical Returns - Deaths & Burials Transcription

Nicholas died of chronic dysentry. He was a seaman on the ship 'Arethusa.' He was buried in the Military Burial Grounds of Fort William in Calcutta.

Where are his and Tamar's children in 1841? It is only the 2 of them in the census record?
