Ancestry's transcription has Tamar as Lauras!

Looking closely as the image, it does say Hodgson when you know what it's supposed to be.
The D has a very short stem, making it look like an O, and the G has a very long tail, so that the G and S together look like a P.

thank you, Argyl, Alvie and safc, I don't know how you do it. It's a wonder you can find anyone with the various translations.

The children:

Nicholas Pickering Hodgson was buried 1837, this is definite. John Pickering Hodgson supposedly died 1840, Mary Pickering Hodgson supposedly dies 1838. These two are off Ancestry so can't be believed. William (born 1843 dies 1845, again off Ancestry. There is Nicholas baptised Oct 1841 but can't find 1851 and Richard White Hodgson born 1845 who is with Tamar 1851.

I think Tamar must have had a sad life, losing her children and then her husband. Surprised she didn't remarry.

Nicholas may well have been away at sea in 1851, too.

Minors in the Royal Navy

The Royal Navy actively employed children and minors within their ranks, and indeed joining the Royal Navy as a boy was an often an unwritten prerequisite for a path towards an officer commission. Positions for minors began with the generic term "ship's boy" which was open to young boys between the ages of eight to twelve, although there was no established cutoff and there are records of boys as old as 15 to 17 joining ships as boys.

Once a boy, further advancement could be obtained through various specialties. A cabin boy assisted with the ship's kitchen, as well as other duties, while a powder monkey helped in the ship's armory. One of the highest positions for a boy was that of "officer's servant". This position was usually reserved for "young gentlemen" who joined a ship between the ages of 12 and 15 and was seen as a preparatory to becoming a midshipmen.

Prior service as a ship's boy was recorded as sea-service; officers' servants could further credit their sea time towards the mandatory requirement for sea time in order to attempt the Lieutenants' Commission Board. After the Age of Sail ended, the position of ship's boy became an actual Royal Navy rank known as "Boy seaman".

This is great.

Awful though, being at sea so young.

Just found 1881 for Sarah and there is a son Johnson Taylor aged 8, so obviously named after Sarah's dad. Sarah is a widow and her mother Margaret is living with them.

Thank you so much.
