I would order the marriage certificate but only give George Richmond's name with the volume and page numbers, just in case Annie's surname has been mistakenly transcribed at some point in proceedings.

If you give both names and it turns out that the name on the certificate is Brough rather than Preston, they won't issue the certificate, but if you just give George's name then they will issue the certificate no matter what the bride's name is.

I'm with you Rootgatherer!

The image for the banns of marriage (George Richmond/ Annie Brough) states banns were read on the 9th, 16th, and 23rd of October 1921. There is a side note to say the couple married the 28th October 1921. The only marriage that seems to fit is the George Richmond/ Annie Preston marriage (4th qtr 1921 Chesterfield).

It seems very likely Annie Brough and Annie Preston were the same person. There could be many reasons Annie married under a different name- and as Rootgatherer said, the only way to be certain it is the same couple is to see the marriage certificate. I think we are all interested to hear the details and hopefully find more connections for your Annie.

You are probably already familiar with ordering certificates, but just in case- I find the easiest (and cheapest) way to order certificates is through the GRO using the page and volume number from the index:

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

Preston Annie - Richmond Chesterfield 7b 1773
Richmond George - Preston Chesterfield 7b 1773

All the more reason to buy a copy of that marriage certificate to see if Annie names a father and the names of the witnesses may prove helpful :-)

AustiQ. The banns that I have found are for George Richmond and Annie Brough for October 28th 1921

Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but there is another possible birth of a daughter in 1920- she died shortly after birth:

Births Jun 1920
Brough Irene (mother's maiden name: Brough) Chesterfield 7b 1716

Deaths
Name: Irene Brough
Death Age: 0
Birth Date: abt 1920
Registration Date: Jun 1920
Registration district: Chesterfield
Inferred County: Derbyshire
Volume: 7b Page: 820
--------------------------------

Also wanted to add that Charles Henry Richmond (brother of George), although he died in 1920, he did marry in 1919 to Nellie Marsden. (she later married Wilfred Anderson).

Name: Charles Richmond (93 Poolsbrook Staveley)
Gender: Male
Marriage Age: 28
Birth Date: abt 1891
Marriage Date: 28 Dec 1919
Marriage Place: Bolsover, Derbyshire, England
Father: John Richmond (Blacksmith)
Spouse: Nellie Marsden
-----------------------------

As Rootgatherer suggests I would certainly get the 1921 marriage certificate for George Richmond/ Annie Preston as according to the banns of marriage for George Richmond (widower) and Annie Brough (spinster) the marriage did take place on October 28th 1921.

Just to verify, My grandparents Charles Henry Richmond Brough and Alice Mary Arfield were married July 28th 1934
Charles HRB mother was Annie Brough as per his birth certificate. There is no father on the certificate. We believ it is a George Richmond.
It looks like Annie had 2 children, Edith A Richmond and CHR Brough
Geouge Richmond had 2 further children with a Hannah Simson, a Zachariah Richmond and a John S Richmond. (my dad remembers an Uncle Zak)

This is from another source, just to throw something else into the mystery.

'A tree on Ancestry proposes that the Annie Brough, the proposed mother of Charles Henry Richmond Brough was an Ann Pountley, the daughter of Thomas James Pountley, born about 1861 in Congleton and Mary Brough, born about 1866 in Macclesfield. It looks like Thomas and Mary separated around 1890/91 and their children William and Walter Pountley started using the surname Brough. I have found the Annie Brough, a servant in Bolsover in 1911 that you mention, but so far can’t find her in the 1901 census or any other source, to confirm that she was Ann Pountley, using the Brough surname like her siblings.'

George Richmond's mother's maiden surname was Siddell so Fred is probably a cousin lodging with George and Zac in 1939.

David Report 16 Aug 2018 10:23

Who is Fred Siddell ?

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 15 Aug 2018 17:32

David, I would be tempted to get Walter's birth certificate to check the name of his parents. I'd then probably buy the 1921 marriage certificate even if just to eliminate it.

If you do buy the certificates please let us know the outcome as it's always good to know if we are wide of the mark.

I just can't help wondering if Annie Preston and Annie Brough are one and the same :-)

No problem Kath.

It probably meant on the census that he was two months old when he died.

John Samuel Richmond had already died by the date of the census in 1911 (which is why his name is crossed off the census image. Here is the death:-

First name(s) JOHN S
Last name RICHMOND
Gender Male
Birth day -
Birth month -
Birth year 1911
Age 0
Death quarter 1
Death year 1911

EDIT sorry Rootgatherer, I didn't refresh the page and didn't see that you had already posted the death.

The date of the census was 2nd April and John Samuel's age is given as 2 months but he must have been older if his birth was registered in the last quarter of 1910.
