I was, also thinking that as his mum married a much younger man after death if his dad , maybe William disapproved. Because otherwise maybe he woukd have gone to live with his mother rather than be destitute and in the work house ? :-S

Shirley Report 1 Sep 2018 20:23

Can anyone see William junior anywhere after 1908 when he was discharged from the Greenwich workhouse,? Wonder if he married , unusual to be still single aged 36. Maybe he went back to Lancashire. Strange how Frederick went to live in Ashton under lyne though. Wondering if he and William moved back together ? Can't seem to find William on the 1901 or 1911 census. Can anyone see him on the 1939. Just wondering if he had,an improvement in fortune . Maybe he went abroad / :-S :-)

just noticed , Frederick and mary are living in the same house she and William lived in. if they didn't rent an owned it, looks like Frederick moved in with mary and William.
I was wondering about the war and maybe William joined up :-)

thanks mary. oh that's very sad for William junior , wonder I he didn't get along with step father Frederick. not really destitute if family around. I wonder what happened after this to William. should have gone back to Lancashire . his dad would have been so disappointed . wonder if he died . will check. :-(

Mary born anywhere between 1847-1850 from both census. Will check for birth but seems,to be more than ten years age difference in her and William. In 1895 she would still be in her mid to late 40,s . :-)

Shirley Report 14 Aug 2018 17:13

Think it was Frederick Henry sheppherd....not purves . But not certain . Could someone check if Mary born in Burnley is married and still alive possibly named purves or more likely sheppherd? Strange spelling of shepperd . :-)

Shirley Report 14 Aug 2018 16:59

Just found a Mary cunliffe marrying a,man either purves or Sheppard in Greenwich in 1895 so that could be her? On the 1901 census can anyone spot a Mary purves or Mary Sheppard born Burnley ...was she born around 1843 , can't remember now ...but quite a bit younger than William wasnt she . Will just check back. But hopefully she will be on the 1901 census as long as she didn't die in between :-S

Shirley Report 14 Aug 2018 16:54

Hi mary
Yes checked that on national archives . I wonder if perhaps Mary and William came back north ? Strange they just disappeared . Unless Mary remarried as she was a bit younger than William was t she ? Strange no sign of William though. Unless he moved abroad ? :-S

I wonder what happened to william cunliffe junior. ? Can anyone find him on the 1901 or 1911 census?
Sounds like he had gone down the similar route to his father and other ancestors working in metal.

Shirley Report 14 Aug 2018 11:44

I dont recognise any local or family names as yet on that ship except maybe thomas greenwood. As he sounds very confident i think he would not mind travelling to america alone. Perhaps he knew someone in New Jersey. ? :-)

Thanks guys. Wonder why he moved ? Wonder if it us actually the William cunliffe. Exciting. Needs more research this does. Brilliant research. I should really get myself on ancestry but because i can use it with limits at work i never have done . Even if not connected to my cunliffes in the end I'm finding it fascinating. :-) :-)

I can't see where Mary b confirmed his arrival , I've missed that somewhere ? Have i missed a post ? :-S

Shirley

Shirley Report 13 Aug 2018 23:42

So.mary b, did you find William and mary in Kent in 1881 and 1891 ? If it's him then I'm happy to be distantly related. Wonder if he went alone on this ship or went with family or friend. Is there,a,way of discovering this ? :-S
Are you able to post the 1881 census and /or 1891 for William and Margaret ?
I dudnt plan to be interested in this family but i wonder if i had a feeling ...hooe it turns out to be them but a bit sad its not the other cunliffe family as I did find them an interesting story too. Perhaps they related distantly ...though different professions . Guess blacksmiths would be higher wages thsn wool combers perhaps ? :-S

Dea

Dea Report 13 Aug 2018 15:15

Shirley,
I put the details on my post above re Williams journey to USA in 1853 on the ship Roscius and Maryb has since confirmed his arrival so he most definitely went over there.

I think that he initially went over searching for a better life but became embroiled in the politics of the country whilst there?
