http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/312663
NU0341 : Kentstone Farm
Subject Location NU 0375 4121 [10m precision]

http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3502797
NT9953 : St Andrew's Church of Scotland, Berwick upon Tweed
Subject Location NT 9996 5317 [10m precision]

So Kentstone is 12 (=53-41) km S of Berwick, and a bit to E. The church is almost exactly on the NY/NU boundary (which is 40 m to E of church)

You can look up OS grid references like NU 0375 4121 at:
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/
You will have to zoom out to zoom level 4 to get the inset topographical map as it enters with a zoom level 2 street map.
You can also look up NU0341, but note the arrow head will be put at NU 03500 41500 i.e., the centre of the 1km square.
Similarly, a lookup of NU 0375 4121 will put the arrowhead at NU 03755 41215 i.e., the centre of the 10 m square of imprecision.

===============

It's worth notingthat if you go back much, there's an oddity abt Berwick - until 20/10/1844 Berwick was in County Durham, not Northumberland.
This applies to all of Berwick RD, including Kentstone which was in Kyloe parish in the Islandshire subdistrict of Berwick RD.
The northernmost coastal parish in Belford RD (i.e., Belford) was also in this big detached bit of Co Durham, as were a few other detached bits scattered around Northumberland.
This can cause some apparently paradoxical birthplace results in 1841 census if you're not aware if it.

I wondered about that Dean/McGlade family too, Erika.

But James of Kentstone was single in 1891, whereas the James who married Margaret was with his family in Newcastle in 1891..

A child of the above marriage

DEAN, MARGARET (MMN) MCGLADE
GRO Reference: 1877 S Quarter in NEWCASTLE ON TYNE Volume 10B Page 99

McGlude on the parish marriage record is a mistranscription. The civil record has her name as McGlade

ErikaH Report 1 Oct 2018 11:40

This MAY be James - although subsequent records I've found cast doubt on it, in view of his age, birthplace and occupation at the time.

The cert would include his occupation when he married

First name(s) James
Last name Dean
Name note -
Marriage year 1875
Marriage date 16 Feb 1875
Marriage place Newcastle-Upon-Tyne
Father's first name(s) John
Father's last name Dean

Spouse's last name McGlude

FMP have all England/Wales BMD

BUT..............no penalties until 1875 for not registering births, which meant that a lot simply weren't registered

Thanks for replying...

I agree with you in that 1881C more likely to be accurate than 1891
William B Ireland !

Looks like a MC will have to order for sure now...perhaps some
more info on there will answers a few queries!

ArgyllGran

I have no idea if 'Dean' is the name of a step-father have no reason
to believe that .....
I am not a direct descendant of the 'Dean Family' but a cousin of mine who is
seems to believe 'William' was born in Ireland.
I did find on FS that William's wife, Ann Allan's Parents were Irish..

Please excuse my ignorance, when it comes to the North of England and Parishes etc
as i am not familiar only with the south east.

That place you mentioned 'Kentstone' ear Haggerston, about 5 miles south of Berwick-upon-Tweed. could well be James Dean birth place.

William & Ann married dec qtr 1879 'Berwick'

Are those 2 places one and the same or close by...

Do you know if FMP have BMD for those areas mentioned.

Once again thanks for all your help !
:-)

ArgyllGran Report 1 Oct 2018 09:43

Kentstone was in Belford reg district - but no Dean births there either.

Kentstone (even mis-spelled) seems too specific to be a mistake - though anything's possible.
Maybe James wasn't a Dean - maybe the enumerator just dittoed the surname in haste.

All conjecture!
As Erika says, best to get William's marriage cert. Then at least you might be able to work out if he had a brother James or not.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 1 Oct 2018 09:19

I would think that the 1881 census info about William's birthplace is more likely to be accurate than that in 1891

Of course, if you get a copy of his marriage cert, you'll find out his father's name - if he knew him.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 1 Oct 2018 09:16

Re your suggestion of a wrong transcription of Kenstone -

it's quite clearly Kenstone on the image.

EDIT:

there's a place called Kentstone, near Haggerston, about 5 miles south of Berwick-upon-Tweed.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 1 Oct 2018 08:39

However, I can't see the birth of either William or James anywhere in Northumberland 1845-1860

In particular, Wooler was in Glendale reg district, and no Deans of any first name were registered there 1845-60.

Could Dean be the name of a step-father?
