William Woan was born in Preston Lancashire 1907 and died still in Preston 1973. He was the son of William and Patience nee Robinson. William and Patience married at St Matthews Church, Preston in 1897. I’ve been trying to find a marriage for the son William but had no success at the moment. I wondered if fresh eyes could have a look please. It might be that he stayed a bachelor. Thank you.

Appears to have been William only from death record
All but 1 William Woan marriage from 1922 onwards are in Preston RD
1931 to Gertrude M Craven - 1939 register probably shows a William b1883 and a Gertrude b1895 in Preston
1931 to Dorothy V Dawson - not found 1939, but there was a Dorothy Victoria Dawson born 1907 Preston RD (and one 1911 Aston RD)
1941 to Hilda Kay - Hilda probably on 1939 register single b 1910
1949 - to Helen M Maxworthy in Hammersmith
1964 to a Sheila M Livesay (possibly born 1940 Preston?)
Would appear to be to Dorothy as this is same address as William's probate
Probate - WOAN Dorothy victoria of 30 Moor Ave Penwortham nr Preston died 28 February 1985 Probate Liverpool 26 April

Probably is my William. I’ve clicked on the probate service but get a message that an error has occurred which has been logged and will be resolved as soon as possible so I will try later. It isn’t helping that every generation has a father or son called William. Even brothers have called their sons William and no middle name with no thought given to the likes of us trying to solve our trees. Ha ha. At least my son has two names and he’s not a William.
Thank you for your help. Pat

1939 register on FMP has the family as HOAN, so went the long way round to find the possible marriage.
If he died in Preston in 1973 that's the only one, so probate record looks correct

Thanks greyghost. That worked and I found him. Now I have another query and i wondered if I should put it here or start another thread but here goes.
I have a marriage certificate for his parents William and Patience. Shows that Patience was 25 when they married on the 17/04/1897 so I assumed that she was born in 1872 in Preston as people didn’t move about quite as much in those days but I can’t find her birth. The marriage certificate says her father was Thomas Robinson and his occupation was weaving master. She is listed as living in Maitland Street. Preston. William who she married was a weaver but Patience has a line through her occupation. Maybe she hadn’t an occupation. William at the time of their marriage lived in Fishwick Parade. Preston. Pat

The birth in Huncoat area sounds possible as Burnley was well know for its mills as Preston was. I’ll have a read at the information then look into it further. Many thanks to you all. Pat

You beat me to it Maddie. I think she may have done as I’ve looked at the 1881 census and it says Patience born 1872 which is fine but above her is listed Thomas Whittaker single born 1855. If this is her father why is he listed as single and where is her mother? I looked and found the same death as you so it must be a possibility. Also looked like Patience had a sister and when her mother and sister died she went to live with her father’s side of the family. Thanks everyone for your help. You always do a good job. Pat

Patience's parents were Thomas Robinson and Ellen Whittaker who married in 1871.
Ellen possibly died in 1874, so Patience is with her grandmother Alice Whittaker in 1881
Thomas Whittaker will be her uncle.
Her Father was Thomas Robinson
Birth cert of Patience will show parents and then
The marriage certificate of Thomas and Ellen would show Father's to confirm Ellen was daughter of Peter and to give a clue as to who Thomas Robinson was

Peter Whittaker was a labourer in Vitrel making. Does anyone know what Vitrel maker is? According to the web Vitrelle is a tempered glass but only introduced about 1970. Maybe Vitrel was a forerunner. The nearest glass works to where he lived would be Pilkingtons at St. Helens.

In 1851 Peter was a coal miner, and in 1871 just a labourer (unspecified).
The word transcribed as "vitrel" could be "nitrol" - something to do with nitroglycerin ???
EDIT:
Or "vitrol" - vitriol:
" The Origins of Vitrol Sulphuric acid, which has the traditional name, “oil of vitriol.” It is a nasty, corrosive liquid, making “vitriolic” an apt term for virulent language. At first it may seem odd that the term “vitriol” derives from the Latin meaning glass, since glass is an inert material.. . . . . . "

A Google search indicates that there were a number of vitriol works in Lancashire.
