Dear All,

One of my ancestors, James Rammell, emigrated in 1878 aged 23 to Melbourne Australia from Devon, UK onboard Northumberland. He was a sugar refiner. He died in 1914 Drummoyne NSW Australia.

I have never been able to find out if he married and had children. I can see possible electoral rolls entries in Ancestry but cannot access them as I don't have the full membership.

James had a brother Edward who came out to Australia from England when his brother James died.

Could someone please have a look for James for me in Australia.

Thanks in advance

Gillian

There is this electoral roll on Findmypast, however James is the only Rammell mentioned, but even if he was married it's unlikely that his wife would be on the electoral roll at that time:-

Hi Kath,

Thanks.

Yes that is James' death. His father was Gibbon Bushell Rammell!

Is there a death date?

Best regards

Gillian

Gigi

Gigi Report 8 Jan 2019 11:06

The marriage is James' brother, Gibbon Rammell who married Elizabeth Jenkins in Devon.

There is no date of death given. You would have to apply for the death certificate to find the exact date (I'm not sure how you go about ordering Australian certificates).

Could see if there’s a report in online newspapers
https://trove.nla.gov.au

However, there seems to be a different person with the same name eg in 1906

REFUSED TO PAY HIS FARE.
James Rammell, 52, a hawker, was, at the Water
Police Court yesterday, fined 10s, or 48 hours in--
prisonment, for refusing to pay a tramway fare of
one penny. Evidence was given to the effect that
Rammell journeyed in the car from Erskine-street
to William-street, and when asked for his fare said "I
refuse to pay on principle

Sydney morning herald, Wed 20 June 1906.

Maths head not on this morning- can’t work out when either of them would have been born. :-0
Edit - the yob seems to be about right?

Hi Detective,

Thanks for that story! James was born in 1848 Kentish Town. So would have been 58 in 1906 but not that far from 52!

A rather dramatic change of employment if it is the same man

A James Rammell born c1855 entered Australia in 1878. Age more in keeping with newspaper report

Hi Erika,

I had assumed that James b1855 was my James b1848 even if the years are a bit out.

There are two sailings from England, one in 1878 and a second in 1881 to Victoria Australia. Maybe the same or 2 different people? The one in 1881 makes sense as it was after his mother had died. His father was already dead.

In 1871 James is in Crediton aged 22 with his family, unmarr, occupation Telegraphist. He had probably left England before the 1881 census.

ErikaH Report 8 Jan 2019 20:25

There is a James Rammell born c1855 on 1861 census in Manchester - fits with the 1878 migration and the newspaper article

I can’t think that the above events relate to someone born in 1848, but that is only my opinion

The name is not unique

Gigi

Gigi Report 9 Jan 2019 10:30

Hi Erika,

Yes, you are correct, the Manchester Rammell is not mine.

Yet you say that your man is the one aged 23 in 1878...............

Gigi

Gigi Report 9 Jan 2019 12:26

That is what I initially thought.

So the first sailing in 1878 is the Manchester James.

And the second sailing in 1881 (just after his mother's death), is my James who died in 1914 (his father's name Gibbon is given in the death record).

James' brother Edward Rammell sailed to Australia to sort out his brother's affairs. Edward then returned to England and he ended his days in Guernsey.
