When William Thomas Walton/Cox was baptised in 1882, the family's address was given as 12 Nile Street.

In 1881, William Cox's parents Thomas and Ruth are at that address - posted by Kath on page 1 - 22 June, 12:10.

Only a year earlier - but Wiliam isn't there with any wife/partner.
So near and yet so far!

I see that alviegal also posted the 1891 census on page one of this thread

Interesting that William Thomas's birth was registered as Walton - but he was baptised as Cox.

Whereas John Thomas, born 2 years later, is both registered and baptised as Walton, with no mention of William:

John Thomas Walton
in the London, England, Church of England Births and Baptisms, 1813-1917
Name: John Thomas Walton
Gender: Male
Record Type: Baptism
Baptism Date: 18 Dec 1883
Baptism Place: Woolwich St Mary Magdalene, Greenwich, England
Mother: Sophia Walton
Register Type: Parish Registers

Address: 12 Nile Street.

Same address as at William Thomas's baptism.

William listed as a railway porter, at William Thomas's baptism

Just for interest, here's an artist's impression of Nile Street dated 1888:

It was a slum area:

ErikaH Report 24 Jun 2020 12:10

Sorry, AG - didn't spot your earlier post with the births - didn't look, to be honest

I assumed there was no info, in view of Rose's posts

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 24 Jun 2020 12:05

Rose -
did you read my posts on 23 June at 18:51 and 18:58?

I gave you the 1901 and 1911 censuses, explained about William's second marriage, and also posted the birth records of all three children, and the death of their mother (William's second wife).

There's no point looking for the boys in 1881, as they were both born after 1881.

Erika was correct in saying there were no Cox/Everson births.
The mother of all three children was Sophia Walton.

As far as 1881 is concerned - it's often the case that some people just weren't recorded.
Frustrating, I know - but that's just the way it is.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 24 Jun 2020 11:58

The boys were Sophia's illegitimate sons

In that case, their births weren't registered - or if they were, they were incorrectly recorded

Check the index yourself - it's free

Those births were AFTER 1881

1891 mentioned above

William Cox Head Widower Male 44 1847 Barge Waterman Gravesend, Kent, England
William Cox Son - Male 8 1883 Scholar Woolwich, Kent, England
John Cox Son - Male 7 1884 Scholar Woolwich, Kent, England
Minnie Cox Daughter - Female 5 1886 Scholar Woolwich, Kent, England

Rose Report 24 Jun 2020 11:37

ArgyllGran,

ErikaH had checked the GRO index and said there were no children listed for Cox with Everson between 1875-1884 so I assumed no children. But low and behold

1891 census William Cox 44 WID Gravesend, Barge Waterman, William Cox 8 Woolwich, John Cox 7 living 44 Earl Street, Charlton, Greenwich

1901 census William Cox WID 48, general labourer, William 20 gen lab. John 18 gen lan, Amelia 16 living 48 West Street, Charlton, Greenwich

I dont get it. Still cannot find the 1881 census even with trying with the 2 boys

.Mary Ann Everson is my Gt.grandfathers sister so I am trying to follow her closely

Thank you so much for your help x

If anyone had found 1881 census they would have posted the info by now.

They may simply not been recorded

Hello again,

I cannot find the 1881 census for William and Mary Ann Cox. I would like to know where they were living at that time if possible.

Thank you

You say you've found Mary Ann Cox's death in Plumstead in 1884.

For our reference:

Mary Ann Cox
in the London, England, Church of England Deaths and Burials, 1813-2003
Name: Mary Ann Cox
Age: 34
Record Type: Burial
Birth Date: abt 1850
Death Date: abt 1884
Burial Date: 14 Oct 1884
Burial Place: St Margaret, Plumstead, Greenwich, England
Register Type: Parish Register

However, although the burial record says her abode was Armstrong Street, Plumstead, her death was registered in Wandsworth, and not Woolwich (which includes Plumstead).

Deaths Dec 1884 (>99%)
Cox Mary Ann 34 Wandsworth 1d 424
